356 | digimon ghost game, 30-38

While I’ve been doing a good job of keeping up with Shield updates while playing, I can’t say the same thing for Digimon Ghost Game—but I have been watching it! Currently up to episode 38.

Bad Friend: The resolution to this episode felt a little too easy to me, and I wasn’t wild about the black/white evil/good theming with the color scheme, but otherwise, I thought this was a pretty fun episode! I enjoyed watching Kadano’s slide to darkness, and loved her sense of fashion, especially the gothic lolita outfit she wore when she was at her darkest.

Killer Blade: In which it is revealed that Angoramon is a sword weeb… I had such an “oh no drop the sword!!” moment when he picked it up, and I love that he figured it out too—it’s just that he literally couldn’t let go of the sword. I really do love Angoramon’s strong desire to protect Ruli, and it’s put to good use in this episode—in that he’s put into a position where he might be the one to hurt her! The horror of being forced to turn against your loved ones… <3

Who Are You?: God, the half-time reveal that Jellymon had been swapped too… what a great twist, and such exquisite timing!! I felt so bad for Gammamon in this episode. The rain scene ;_; Also, Betsumon are so disturbing to look at, even setting aside the identity-stealing.

Whispers of the Dead: ahhh, gotta love a Kiyo-centric episode! On the day I watched this, I’d actually meant to stop on the previous episode, but the preview showed Kiyoshirou crying, and, well. I couldn’t resist! This was also such a good episode for the Kiyo & Jellymon dynamic, omg <3 Her scolding Piximon for his sake! Her reaction when she’s told that Kiyo might genuinely die—crying out, “you’re lying!” and desperately trying to resuscitate him with her electricity, the little detail of her hands clenching at the sheets—and then how eagerly she goes “answer it!!!” at the phone when Hiro hesitates, the thrilled way she says, “Darling!” when she hears his voice—and how she voluntarily puts herself into a state between life and death to go to where he is to rescue him! <3 <3 <3

Also: her telling the enemy Digimon, “Darling is all, all, all mine!” <3 <3 <3

Said enemy Digimon did give me some Majora’s Mask vibes. I also love that Kiyoshirou goes to Mummymon for his healthcare. Also, couldn’t help but think about how this episode featured a perfect set-up for an isekai crossover featuring him, considering he very nearly got hit by that car (and in actual fact was literally on his way to the afterlife due to falling & hitting his head instead).

Wall Crawlers: I do not blame Hiro for screaming at his first sight of the gecko person; I’d already seen it and still I was also creeped the fuck out. wow those things are horrifying. (Ruli saying, “She is indeed a human gecko” when she first sees them did make me want to laugh, though.) The jewel thief plotline reminded me of Sailor Moon… also, Gecko Ruli made me think about how these children should have so much trauma, wow. I do love the little detail of Angoramon clutching the unconscious gecko Ruli to protect her!

Werewolf: Small town horror time! I put my metaphorical money on it being Weregarurumon & was, obviously, incorrect. I really loved the vibes of this episode, and thought the build-up to Angoramon’s new evolution was very well done, but I do kind of wish that this episode had been two-parter—I think it could have benefited from having had more build-up.

As for the evolution itself—while I loved the build-up to that moment, I have to admit that I’m not wild about Lamortmon! It’s not that the design is bad, precisely—but it’s not what I want from Angoramon and, more importantly, I’m not a fan of how bestial & feral it is… It is interesting how Angoramon’s different evolutions showcase different kinds of devotion, but still, not my fave. I thinkkkkk the characters do get another evolution after this, so fingers crossed that I enjoy the final one more!

Also, in this episode I discovered that Angoramon is, in fact, much skinnier than I realized—I genuinely wondered if Ruli’s arms going through his fur like that was an animation error or something, but no, apparently he really is all fur (the figure at the top of the model sheet is the relevant one). Finally, the werewolf & moon princess legend at the end kind of gave me Ruli/Angoramon vibes/parallels…

Labyrinth of Grief: I wasn’t really invested in this one for the most part, but I acknowledge that the horror elements did a good job of being nightmare fuel-level of quality. Also, the true horror: climate change. Not to get too real, but when Hiro went, “humans won’t go extinct!” I had a moment of, Hiro, are you sure about that… also: “we’re going to live if it’s the last thing we do” uh Hiro?? there’s a small problem with the logic here??

One thing I appreciate about this series is how humans & their partners aren’t always knocked out of commission at the same time, which gives rise to interesting combinations for team-ups. Also, I always love Jellymon being concerned about Kiyoshirou, and so Teslajellymon going, “What are you doing to my darling?!” was quite <3

Horde of the Dead: NO NOT ZOMBIES sobsobsob I saw the episode preview for this one, and despaired… but finally I decided that I would watch it, and I’m glad I did, even though I definitely didn’t watch the screen as carefully as I usually do. (On the bright side, I got a decent amount done on my current cross-stitch project during this episode? Usually this is a terrible series to craft along to, simply because I’m too invested.) At the start of the episode, I was all, “ah, I see, pollution…. the true enemy….”, and tbh I wasn’t fully off about that. Also, the townspeople tying the unconscious “zombies” up in sacks & putting them into a garage… that’s a new one. (I assume. I am not exactly a zombie expert, considering how much of a “no no NOPE” they are for me.) Apparently Ruli is a fan of zombie media! I feel like Angoramon sounded a bit despairing when he mentioned that, haha.

But the main reason why I’m glad I watched this episode, despite the heavy squick of it all, is the ending. I adore how seriously this series treats Digimon death, and this episode is a great example of it! I think this is the first time the characters have actually looked at a situation and decided together that killing their enemy is the right choice, and I really liked the gravitas of that moment—how none of them are happy about it, but Rareraremon is suffering so deeply, in a way that can’t be fixed, and in the process of that suffering is also causing death to so many others—and so they decide that reverting him to Digitama is the most merciful thing they can do.

The Diviner: Hiro having to step in for a lead role for a historically-inspired play (due to the planned actor being unable to make it) because he matches the visual specifications for it, and then getting kidnapped by a supernatural something with a personal connection to that play is a very female character type of plotline. I’m here for it! Especially since it’s so rare to see Hiro getting damselled. Also, I think this might be the first Ghost Game episode to have actual ghosts…? In that Doumon was being possessed by literal (human!) spirits. Relatedly: “the Ashikaga shall fall” uhhhh a little late to the party there!

Possessed!Hiro’s grinch face was delightfully unsettling, and once again my heart broke for poor Gammamon—had flashbacks to the Betsumon episode. Once again, he’s being faced with a Hiro who doesn’t recognize him… Finally, it was very fun to have that outsider POV moment of Espimon reacting to Gammamon’s rapid evolutions! Especially his ‘you’ve got to be kidding me!’ moment when he evolved again into Canoweissmon.
