0042 | in which I discuss my feelings about Alice in Wonderland, & Alice adaptations & retellings
► Today I am meant to talk about books I Just Finished. Well, this should be fun. This is actually rather fortuitous timing, because this topic segues nicely into something that I was thinking about yesterday / considering writing an entry about.
Yesterday, I finished reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. This is actually the first time I've ever read it, and I only did so because 1) I had finished reading my last read-while-I-wait-for-things book on my phone and 2) it came already installed on my Google Play Books on my phone. I've disliked the Disney movie since I was a kid, so I didn't really have high hopes for it.
In short: I was right. I didn't really like it very much.
However, I find this interesting because, while I apparently don't like the original Alice or adaptations of it, I do have a major weakness for Alice retellings. This is true for both songs— Avril Lavigne's "Alice" and Taylor Swift's "Wonderland" immediately come to mind— as well as anything where they take the archetypes introduced (Alice, Chesire Cat, Mad Hatter, etc), as well as the concept of there being a "Wonderland", and make something new with it. I just find something about that really appealing.
That line of thought was inspired by the fact that the Shall We Date? series seems to have released a new game a couple of days ago called Shall We Date? Guilty Alice, and I want to play it so bad. The only thing that's holding me back is that the comments are complaining about having to pay to play the game after the (free) prologue, and, while I am all for paying for games, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is one of those pay-to-get-each-individual-route kind of games instead of paying a set, reasonable price for the whole thing.
Still, I want.
► Do any of you remember that meme where you post the first sentence of the first entry for each month? I saw it popup on my flist some days ago, and it made me really want to do it again— I used to do it, and I can't remember why I stopped.
Without further adieu, 2014:
January: So, Yuletide reveals, anyone?
February: So, about a month ago, I went to see Frozen in theaters with a friend of mine.
March: Just so everyone knows, reading a 600,000+ word fix-it fic for the A Song of Ice & Fire books is not conducive to productivity.
April: none
May: I... don't think I've updated this journal since around mid-March. Oops.
June: Because I love poetry, and I'm about to go to the dentist, and why not?
July: I need to pack— I'm heading back to school for summer classes, and the move-in day for summer housing is tomorrow— but I have a few things I want to talk about, so I'm writing this post in snatched moments in-between packing and other things I need to get done before I leave.
August: So, I am mainly writing this entry because at the moment, I am taking a break from what I really want to be doing, which is playing video games until I melt into the ground.
September: I have literally been writing this entry on and off again for weeks.
October: none (unless you count my Yuletide Letter)
November: Because I've been kind of neglecting this journal, and it's been a while since I've made one of these posts.
December: So, I've been wanting to play Crusader Kings II ever since I read this amusing comment about it onfail_fandomanon (side-note: that community increases my to-play list by far too much).
In conclusion: I really need to stop beginning entries— and sentences in general— with the word "so".
