131 | Mystic Messenger, Seven’s Route, Day 9

Mystic Messenger update: V is being so suspicious;; It’s actually really hard not to choose all the answers doubting him, but when I double-checked the guide I'm falling back on it keeps telling me that I shouldn’t be going for those answers. But everything about that conversation was as shady as hell, from V telling Seven he shouldn’t read certain letters hidden in the apartment to his reaction when he heard Seven mention Saeran— and, on that note, why is he so reluctant to let the other members of the RFA know that Saeran exists? And pretending that he lost his internet connection to get out of the chat? Cold. He definitely knows something more than he’s letting on. I don’t blame Seven for losing his faith in him.

Seven and Saeran’s childhood was awful. There was definitely emotional abuse going on there, especially on Seven’s side, and maybe physical abuse/something more on Saeran’s side, considering how kid!Seven told him to avoid their mom’s attention. Honestly, everything I'm learning is making me retroactively more depressed for Seven in the other routes, especially the ones where he learns about Saeran, and I was already feeling bad enough for him there.

I mostly bring this up because I wanted that context for what I’m going to say next, which is: holy shit, Rika and V. First, in that scene where Rika’s talking to Seven about installing the bomb into the apartment? She’s as manipulative as hell, and I was surprised that Seven didn’t see it/believes her (he actually tells the RFA that “She had no intention of hurting anyone.”) until I later learned about how she and V helped him escape his mother. Alsoo, “for the great good”??? Who is she, Dumbledore???

I’m also side-eyeing the hell out of V’s speech to Seven at the church. (Side-note, but kid!Seven’s owl glasses are adorable.) V’s speech doesn’t ring the same alarm bells as Rika’s did on its own, but knowing what I do about how it all turned out (especially re: Saeran), it’s… hard to read it as anything other than them being predators, manipulating an abused child’s desperation. Maybe I’m being too hasty; while I’m super-suspicious of Rika considering everything we’ve seen of her, it could be that V was genuine in that moment, and was only covering it up later for Rika’s sake and/or to hide his own mistakes.

At the very least— pretty much every other route was marked by the characters needing to trust V, and I haven’t forgotten how V told the MC at the end of Zen’s route that he hopes she helps all the RFA members with their emotional wounds. So while I’m feeling suspicious as hell about him, I'm willing to give him a little bit more leeway (until/unless I get more proof otherwise) than Rika, who’s been ringing alarm bells for me for a long while now.

Also: V’s “please consider me as your father” thing and Seven’s immediate acceptance + mention that he’s seen V as a father for 10+ years now in one of the chats really puts a different spin on Jumin’s ‘I don’t think Seven sees V as a friend’ thing.

Everyone’s faith in V is really shattering at this point (not that I can blame them). I’ve already mentioned Jumin’s doubting comments in my last entry, I think, and I don’t think I need to cover Yoosung or Seven— they’re both obvious for different reasons— but even Zen’s getting in on this, even before Seven’s conversation with V.
Zen: “I’ve never been this upset with V…”
Zen: “but right now, the trust fund jerk’s actually doing more than V.”
And, in a phone call, “If he couldn’t even be realistic about something that can risk someone’s life… he is out of his mind. I know he helped me and saved me, but I have to say that.”

Honestly, only Jaehee hasn’t said anything doubting, iirc, and she hasn’t said anything really supportive either— mostly, she’s worried about the RFA splitting up / making too hasty of a judgement.

There was such an Ed & Al-esque tinge to kid!Seven’s “I know that… but… I don’t think I can leave without Saeran. He’s my one and only brother!” His robot kitty also breaks my heart— both because he programmed it to turn on and cheer up whenever it senses that he’s depressed, and also to obey the MC above all else.

I do have faith things will end well, though, if only… because this is Seven’s route? And this doesn’t strike me as the kind of game that will end on an unhappy ending. Maybe bittersweet, because I don’t the problems between Saeran and Seven can be solved in the remaining days, but not flat-out unhappy either. ...It’s going to make getting Seven’s bad endings hard on me, though. I just want him to be happy. >_>

I’ve definitely been getting the sense that this is the “true” route for the game— well, I suspected it before too, considering how “Unknown” was obviously connected to Seven, and he was the cause of so much of the overarching plot, but now I’m getting more convinced, mainly because… some of the other characters have started taking steps to improve their life? Yoosung seems newly determined to do well with his life after his mother’s visit—
Yoosung: “I’ve been looking back on how I’m been living my life,”
Yoosung: “and told myself that I wouldn’t embarrass her any longer”
Yoosung: “and start setting proper goals and do volunteering work again...”
(And then he finds out Rika wanted a bomb in her apartment, whoops— but it doesn’t seem to have hurt his new determination too much, so.) And, on a lesser note, Zen isn’t dealing with his family problems (though I can tell he’s definitely thinking about them, considering his reactions to Jumin’s, ‘family solves everything! :D’ approach to...everything), but he is trying to quit smoking, which, tbh, was the problem that worried me the most in his route;;; Maybe that’s not right of me, but I can’t help it.

To end this on (what is to me) an amusing note, this happened in a phone call with Zen:
“Or no, is it this? Artists sometimes confuse reality with their imaginations. V’s an artist… so he might have brought objects from his imagination…”
“No, no! But installing a bomb has nothing to do with art!”
Deidara disagrees, haha.

Also, I finally went through all the guest profile information yesterday… and Zen’s old friend (the who now owns the lamb skewers place) so clearly has a crush on him, ha. ♥ The personal info reads: “He’s watched all of Zen’s shows, but he’s too embarrassed to say it. His username for Zen’s fan site: ‘Don’t you dare touch Zen’”.
