140 | in which I beat Dirge of Cerberus

I beat Dirge of Cerberus yesterday. General thoughts: Overall, it was… okay? The story is definitely going into Optional Canon territory for me— so much about that plot was nonsense, and the Hojo reveal had me going “what. what. WHAT.” at my screen, though there were some things that I did like. I did get better at the gameplay, and I was definitely having fun with it by the end, though I still wasn’t objectively “good”. (My final score was a “C”, which I thought appropriate enough.)

I feel very mixed about… basically everything about Lucrecia. There were some moments where I thought her characterization was going somewhere interesting (like that scene where Hojo implies that she’s taking advantage of Vincent’s state for her own experiments and she gets upset, but also can’t deny it), but then the game tried to pretty it up in the end, which… I didn’t find very believable? I never got a firm grip on her motivations/what the hell was going on with her, and I feel like she was wayyy too focused on Vincent, considering that, iirc, her only appearance in FFVII consisted on her focusing entirely on Sephiroth.

Everything about Vincent’s dad made me go WTF at the game. I think that might have been my least favorite part. He just… seemed so unnecessary. Also, what the hell was with that name? Hilariously, while the game utterly failed at convincing me on Vincent/Lucrecia, it did leave me utterly convinced that Lucrecia was in love with Grimoire, ha.

I also found all the stuff in the end with Shelke to be… a bit weird. I also thought that she was supposed to die? I mean, I did figure that was going to be circumvented somehow, but I also expected there to be an explanation for said circumvention? Even if it was just, “oh yeah, we’re going to give her the stuff she needs to survive now”. It made her whole “why do I care so much about the results of this when I’m going to die anyway” near the end fall a little flat to me. (I did like her though, outside of that.)

On a less critical note, I wanted to give Vincent a hairbrush throughout most of that game, haha. And some conditioner. What happened to that silky flowing hair? I mean, he’s always looked like he just rolled out of bed (appropriate), but I couldn’t get over how rough the length of his hair looked. (I know that it was the graphics, since his hair is normal in the cinematic cutscenes.)

But, you know, I can forgive this game many of its flaws, because there were so many great Vincent-Yuffie interactions. I’ve said this already, but Yuffie saving Vincent in the beginning was 100% my thing, and that did not change when she saved him again (from Rosso) or when he saved her. ♥ Also, Yuffie worrying about Vincent in the end. It made me really happy. ♥

Also, is it me, or were Nero and Weiss… kind of shippy? Nero’s obsession definitely did not ring as platonic to me. At one point I almost thought that Nero was going to kiss him, though he ended up hugging him instead.

Finally, seeing Gackt’s name in the credits really brought me back to my LJ days, haha. I definitely had a few Gackt fans on my flist back then… I’d forgotten all about that until now.
