158 | in which I babble about writing, Iddy Iddy Bang Bang, and the recent SSSS updates

So… when I signed up for iddyiddybangbang this year, it was with the intention of writing the Valdemar fic that I dreamed up for the first round of Iddy Iddy Bang Bang (before I decided not to sign-up because I didn’t have the time for it just then). And I still do like the idea a lot! But Stand Still Stay Silent is pretty much eating my brain right now, and when the first check-in happened and I realized that I hadn’t done so much as canon review for said Valdemar fic, I… well, first I said, “shit”, and then I considered dropping out, and then yesterday it occurred to me: if I’m finding it hard to concentrate on writing fics for something that’s not SSSS, then why don’t I just… write an idfic for SSSS?

So I started to brainstorm just what my dream iddy scenario for SSSS would be. And it went something like this: “Well, it’d definitely need to be about Emil and Lalli. And they’d end up separated from the rest of the crew in the silent world, and be trying to make their way back to the crew, and the snow and ice will definitely play a role. And they’ll definitely need to be attacked by a troll, maybe even a giant, and then one of them will need to jump in and protect the other, and— wait a second, this is starting to sound familiar…”

In related news, the latest SSSS updates have been making me shriek with glee. Especially today’s, omg. *_* The whole page is amazing, but those last two panels. Lalli looks like he’s not even thinking— he’s just acting, like there’s only one thing he can do, and he’s going to do it. And that last panel— agh, so exciting! So dramatic! I’m flailing so hard over this.

Though this moment, where Lalli conveys that Emil needs to be quiet also made me swoon and die. (It’s also weirdly similar to a moment in one of the WIPs languishing in my fic folder. Stand Still Stay Silent: the canon where all my fic-ish desires are actually canon.)

(I think I did figure out a potential story to write for Iddy Iddy Bang Bang, by the way— and one that’s not just Canon, Redux at that. I did some iddy-brainstorming last night, by which I mean I listed all the iddy or not-specifically-iddy-but-still-happy-making things I could fit into my premise. And today I’ve done some outlining, though I’m still not sure how the plotty bits are going to be wrapped up. The working title is "cursed princess Emil", which makes me ridiculously happy every time I think about it.

I’m talking about all of this partially because I… just wanted to talk about all of this, but also partially to try to add some extra motivation to my actually writing and finishing this in time. There’s… fifteen or so days left until fics are due, I think? And, unlike with exchanges, I’ve never been very good with big (or mini, in this case) bang deadlines. I suspect it’s because with exchanges, I’m motivated by a mix of not wanting to disappoint my recip and my love of giving people presents, while with bangs, the only person I really can disappoint is… myself. So I’m hoping that talking about this here will give me some extra external motivation.)
