229 | a few thoughts from my TAZ Balance relisten
I just finished up the second-to-last episode of the Eleventh Hour arc in my The Adventure Zone relisten, and I have some brief Thoughts and Feelings that I want to record. It’s such a good episode?????
One thing that struck me this time around is how, although the Temporal Chalice seems kinder and much more reasonable than the other relics (e.g., how it promises to let June go regardless of how things turn out & then keeps that promise), it’s also not without its own streak of malice. Specifically, I’m thinking about how it forces them to watch the destruction of Phandolin in slow motion after Magnus & Taako & Merle disappoint it by refusing all of its offers. It’s both petty and cruel, in a way that shows that it’s not as different from the other relics as it seems.
But mostly, I’m just crying about how much I love their refusals, oh my god. They’re all so good?? I really feel like it’s a character-defining moment for all three of them. The way they refuse the cup & their reasons for doing so all perfectly encapsulate who each of the three of them are, and just, I love it, I love it, I love it.
Also, let me just indulge in my Taako love for a moment and flail about how much I love his refusal of the cup specifically, oh my god. It’s so funny? Like, I was definitely biting back some laughter there. But also I deeply love the casual way he refers to Glamour Springs as that thing that he’d (direct quote) “spent so long feeling kind of bad about — not super bad — but like pretty darn bad”. Trying and failing to put what I love about it into words, but IT’S SO GOOD. I LOVE HIM.
Also: kind of love how Magnus basically promises to tell them his tragic backstory after the adventure’s over? Just appeals to the “secrets being revealed” part of my id.
