273 | aerois thoughts update, through episode 33

High Rollers: Aerois thoughts, spoilers through episode 33 (...and 38, kind of, despite not having listened to it yet?).

The way I instantly googled when/whether Quill gets resurrected pretty much as soon as he fell… I was pretty “oh no!” about Sentry dying, but—in hindsight—that was a lot more because of interest in her plotlines rather than her character herself, while my “oh no!!!” about Quill is a lot more because of my fondness for Quill himself!

But now that I’ve been reassured that we do get Quill back, I got to settle back and enjoy some of my absolute favorite things: temporary character death, and grief & mourning. Lucius’ reaction to his death is just my everything!!! That he got to land the finishing blow on the person who killed them! And how he did it, unspeaking and ruthless—before his breaking down sobbing and burying his face in Quill’s chest after the battle was over????

Like, yes, Lucius is my fave, and I’m very fond of his and Quill’s friendship, but even if both of those things weren’t true, pretty much every single thing about his reaction to Quill’s death is basically my id on a plate and I would have had feelings based on that alone.

I also kind of love that these deaths took place so close to each other in-universe! Canonically, it was only three days after Sentry’s death that Quill went down, which is truly heaping trauma upon trauma for the party.

Speaking of trauma—Nova’s reaction to Sentry’s death was also quite satisfying! Way back when we had the goliath battle, I described it as having felt like a “campaign-defining moment”, particularly in regard to Nova’s horror/guilt at what her ““running away”” caused, and was later a bit disappointed that it didn’t come up again… but then it did! And her bringing it up in the context of the crisis that Sentry’s death causes for her made perfect narrative sense.

And on that note, I really enjoyed the conversation Nova and Lucius had on the beach, where he’s trying to comforting her. SO good. Love him, love their friendship <3 (I do recall there being other moments in this batch of episodes that also gave me Nova & Lucius friendship feelings, but this is the only specific example that comes to mind.)

Currently, I’m on part one of episode 33, and—I have to say, Pyri only had to speak a few lines before I was grateful to know that Quill’s coming back for reasons completely unrelated to my fondness for Quill himself, lol. Maybe he’ll grow on me, but my first reaction was irritation. (On the other hand, I quite like Oriya, and I’ve grown to be sad that we’ll almost certainly lose her once Sentry’s back. Pity Rhiannon can’t play two characters, haha.)

I’m still in the middle of the combat in this episode, so I don’t know if this will come up or not, but I am fascinated by how the poison on those fairies’ arrows means that Lucius has now been asleep for the first time in his life?? Unless I misunderstood something during the DM’s whole ‘you’re asleep! — oh wait, elves can’t be magically induced into sleep, nevermind — wait, this is a poison, so it still counts!’ thing. The thought of experiencing sleep for the first time as a being who is usually physiologically incapable of doing so is wild to me (and, though I know it was a joke without much thought put behind it, does give me thoughts about Lucius’ “can’t I just go back to sleep” line when Nova shakes him awake.)
