0049 | in which I discuss Kingdom Hearts: Recoded
► I sent out the Holiday / Christmas cards today! It's somewhat later than I had intended, but hopefully they'll all still get there in time. ♥ If you want one and haven't asked for it yet, it's not too late— I still have plenty of cards, and am more than willing to send some more.
► Today's topic is Quote From A Book That Inspires You/Gives You Feels. There... are many quotes which can fall into this category. I used to collect quotes, and books have always been a great source for good ones. I don't think I can choose one favorite.
That being said, I'll share the last quote I wrote down, which was back in October. It came from The Moonlight Palace by Liz Rosenberg.
So, I originally did not play Recoded because that was around the time I got burnt out on Kingdom Hearts in general, and was feeling annoyed by how Squeenix was obviously milking the series for all that it's worth. After watching all of those cutscenes— well, while I'm glad that I've seen them now, I am also very, very glad that I never went to the trouble of actually playing the game.
In short, that was probably one of the most convoluted and unnecessarily messy storylines I have ever seen in a game.
Was I the only one who thought that the creation of data!Sora was... somewhat unethical, in-universe? They (that is, Mickey, with a side of Donald and Goofy) create this sentient being, manipulate him with words of friendship so that he helps them achieve their objective, and then abandon him once the job is done (because I highly doubt that they're ever going back to the datascape).
I also think it would have made a lot more sense had it been the real Sora playing through the game, especially at the end. While I did like data!Sora, once he lost his memories, there... was not much difference between him and the real!Sora, and it would have made much more sense for the overall story of the series for it to have been the real!Sora to have met data!Namine and have his memories of CoM returned to him in that way.
I did like some things about it, of course. The scenes in Wonderland were rather cute, and I was surprised to find myself shipping data!Sora/data!Alice. I also got into data!Sora/data!journal!Riku in a way that I don't think I ever really felt about Riku/Sora, for all that I've always been vaguely fond of it. Finally, the Roxas scenes hurt my heart, for all that he fell into the game's trap of using the word "hurt" too much.
Overall, though, I don't think the content of the story was enough to justify having a whole game dedicated to it. I'm glad that I simply watched the cutscenes instead of buying and playing through the entire game.
► In other news, this tree music is so pretty. I can't help but listen to it on repeat.

"...and I learned for the first time that when we lose the people closest to us, we tend to become more like them— as if to immediately fill the unbearable lack they have left behind."► The other day, my older brother and I decided that we were going to watch through all of the cutscenes for Kingdom Hearts: Recoded, since 1) neither of us ever played the game and 2) his recent birthday meant that we now had easy access to all of those scenes through Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix 2.5. We finished it last night, and now I have much to say.
