0095 | in which I realize that I'm sick of thinking of unique titles for my entries
► A new year, and a new anime season! Here’s my initial thoughts:
ERASED: Of all the anime on this list, this is the only thing I’ve seen two episodes of, and, I have to say, I am definitely hooked. It’s easily the best thing I’ve watched, and, unless they seriously drop the ball on it, I think it’s going to turn out to be absolutely spectacular. The main plot seems to be tackling quite a few ideas that I muse over regularly, so this is definitely Relevant To My Interests, but I think that I would love this series even without that.
One thing that I'm curious about is how that high school girl is going to tie into all of this— after all, I… don’t think she was born yet when the main character was ten-ish? But she played a sizable role in the first episode, and she’s in the opening, and the main character already had a flashback to something she said when talking to the girl who was murdered the first time around, so I don’t think I'm wrong in thinking that she’s at least semi-important.
Sekko Boys: On one hand, what the hell did I just watch. On the other hand… it’s only about seven minutes long, and watching it put me in a good (if baffled) mood, so I think that I’ll definitely be back for more.
Haruchika: I wasn’t going to watch this, and then… I did, because band. It loses points for the main character playing the flute, but the other main character playing the French horn gives it a decent boost in that department. ;) AND there’s a trumpet, so I suppose all is forgiven. (I know, my bias is showing.) ANYWAYS. I actually knew the twist at the end (because discussion on FFA), and that made parts of the episode difficult for me to watch, especially near the end, because… I was worried about it being revealed in an embarrassing way? But it worked out fine, to my relief.
In any case, I’m not dropping this series yet, but I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be watching this series. It was enjoyable, but not particularly notable. Unless it does something to catch more of my attention soon, I’m probably just going to watch this until the day/week comes that it feels like too much effort.
Prince of Stride: I LOVE THIS ONE. Okay, I know that I said that ERASED is the best thing that I’ve watched— and I am sticking to that— but this is probably the series that left me the most flail-y, and it is definitely the one that got the most laughs out of me. I am already super in Nana and Takeru’s relationship, and sensing major OT3 potential with Riku. So, yeah. It’s energetic, fun, has some promising characters/relationships— in short, is there any way that I’m not going to watch this?
I also checked out Nurse Witch Komugi, which I thought would be a definite shoo-in, considering it’s a magical girl series, but… I didn’t even end up finishing the episode. I don’t know if I was just in the wrong mood for it, or if it really was the episode itself, but I just could not get into it.
The next on my to-watch list is Divine Gate, but I have to wait until tomorrow to watch that one, since it’s not up for non-subscribers on Funimation yet.
I might also check out Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash, and Dimension W. With Grimgar, I was interested in based on the summary, but the review for it over at the Josei Next Door left me a bit uncertain, whereas her review for Dimension W made me at least vaguely intrigued by it. We’ll see.
I’m also really interested in Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage, but it doesn’t seem like it’s been licensed (yet)? I’m crossing my fingers that it ends up being one of Crunchyroll’s unrevealed shows, because 1) I’d like to check it out, and 2) I need more shows on Crunchyroll. I don’t like watching on Funimation. =/ Plus, I actually pay for Crunchyroll, and I’d like to get my money’s worth from it.
Oh, I nearly forgot— I did start Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju as well! I got about seven minutes in, and liked what I saw of it, but when I saw how long the episode actually was, I realized that I was definitely not hooked enough to spend nearly an hour on a single episode. I might go back to it eventually, though.
► Speaking of which— I don’t think I ever talked about my thoughts on last season, did I? In short: the only shows I watched to the end were Concrete Revolutio and Dance With Devils. I thought Concrete Revolutio was fantastic, if a bit messy in the middle, and I’ll definitely be watching when it starts up again.
As for Dance with Devils, it was immeasurably entertaining, and I’d actually argue that it was genuinely good by the end. I could go into rhapsodies over that ending, honestly. ♥ (Also— I was saving this link for a mid-season update I never did, but I have to say, this tweet was such an accurate summation of my thoughts while watching this one, especially in the beginning half.)
► I have a bit more to say (mostly about Amnesia Memories, which I spent the first ten days or so of this year playing), but I’ve been working on this entry on and off for about a week, and I just really want to get it posted now. Perhaps next time.
