straightforwardly | 103 | in which I cry over The Lion King (again), and show off my Yuletide fic

► Today's Christmas, which in my family means Mandatory Family Movie Night. This time around we went for a rewatch of The Lion King, and I swear, that movie gets sadder every time I watch it. I don't think I've ever cried so much on a viewing of The Lion King as I did this time around. Which. Usually I cry less when I revisit a canon, not more, but not with this movie. And I think this viewing was the first time I saw it as having a bittersweet ending rather than a happy one. I mean, I love that scene at the end, where it's raining and Simba takes his place at Pride Rock— but when I consider how much trauma he's been through, and how uncertain he still is of his place— and that moment when he looks up to the sky, to the stars— ugh, it just breaks my heart.

I mean. It's still an excellent movie. It's just that it's also really, really sad.
