Once more, Scum Villain skews my results, haha. I suspect it’ll look different next year!
Longest Story: The Pet Monster In The Bottle: Or, How An Eldritch Being Learns To Become A Red-Blooded Human (12,915 words)
Shortest Story: among the clouds and pines (100 words) and electric sparks through shadowed halls (100 words)
What's your favorite story of the year?
Probably “of all my dreams you are the loveliest”, though I’m also still fairly pleased with “accidentally overhearing B E E P”!
Most Fun To Write:
“The Pet Monster In The Bottle”! I’ve never written such a long fic so quickly; it felt like the inspiration was pouring out of me faster than my fingers could type.
Hardest To Write:
Despite it basically being basically set-up for smut + smut, I struggled a surprising amount with “The Way I Dreamed Of You”—but I suspect that had more to do with the headspace I was in at the time I wrote it than with the fic itself.
Favorite To Read:
I’d have had a different answer earlier in the year, but right now, it’s definitely “of all my dreams you are the loveliest”.
Most Popular:
Whether you sort it by kudos, bookmarks, or comments, the answer’s always the same: “The Pet Monster In The Bottle” wins out over all.
Favorite Title
Definitely a tie between “The Pet Monster In The Bottle: Or, How An Eldritch Being Learns To Become A Red-Blooded Human” and “accidentally overhearing B E E P”, which are both really fun titles in different ways.
Favorite Opening Line
The light of the sconces on the walls flickered; an eerie breeze rustled through the halls, forcing goosebumps onto pale flesh.
— electric sparks through shadowed halls
Favorite Closing Line
And she knows, too, that the closest she ever came to seeing that emptiness filled was when she watched him caress their Shizun’s thigh—right before he ripped the leg out at the hip.
— this door you might not open, and did
Greatest Sense Of Accomplishment:
There are two—the first being ““The Pet Monster In The Bottle”, as I rarely managed to complete longer works of fic, and I not only managed to finish this one—the second-longest fic posted to my AO3 account!—but also did it within a span of three days.
The second is “of all my dreams you are the loveliest”. Technically “In This Garden” was the fic that first broke through my months-long writing block, but that was also just sheer self-indulgence without any serious regard for quality. It was “of all my dreams you are the loveliest”, which I wrote a day or so later, that both recaptured the joy that writing’s always brought me and managed to be the kind of story that I can be proud of telling.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Nothing in particular comes to mind. Honestly, just writing at all this year ended up being a horrible struggle.
Do you have any fanfic or prolific goals for the new year?
I’d like to write a NYR for Yuletide—specifically, an unfinished treat that I first started in 2018.
(...After I typed this, it occurs to me that I have multiple unfinished treats from 2018 that I’d like to finish someday, not just the specific one I was thinking of, haha.)
Beyond that, I want to try to take it easy—as few deadlines and pressure as possible. This year, I tried to break through the awful headspace I was in with deadlines and exchanges and failed miserably; it was only when I fell in love with a canon and wrote inspired by nothing more than a love of it that I finally managed it. So I’d like to try to follow that spirit in the new year and see where it takes me.
Finally: charts!

I meant to have kudos stats for this year too, but, uh, I kind of fell off from keeping my spreadsheet updated sometime in mid-August? I do still have all my unrecorded kudos email saved to a separate folder in my email inbox, so maybe I’ll get around to updating the spreadsheet at some point. If I do, I’ll update this entry with any interesting stats then.
