257 | a new year, the snowflake challenge, & my 2023 gaming in review

Happy 2024!

And for me, happy truly is the key word here—I’m entering this year in a such a good place. 2023 had its ups and downs like all years do, but I’ve reached such a good place in my personal/real life this year. The kind of good that I was honestly worried that I’d never manage to achieve. So, I’m entering this new year feeling quite happy and hopeful for the future. /sappy

► Every year, I tell myself I’m going to do the [community profile] snowflake_challenge again—and every year since my last successful attempt in 2017(!), I’ve failed at that. But not this year! At the time of my typing this, we’ve reached Day 2 of the prompts.

Day One’s prompt was to update your fandom information on your profile. I don’t really have an introduction post in the traditional sense, nor do I particularly feel the need to have an in-depth profile—I left those things behind back when I left lj. But there is one thing that I have changed my mind about, and that’s the interests portion of my profile. Again, it’s something that I used back in my lj days, but have always left blank here on dreamwidth—but now, that’s no longer the case.

Granted, it’s been so long that I’m not entirely sure what makes for “good” interests to include on it anymore, but regardless! I can always fiddle with it later; the important thing is that it’s no longer empty.

Day Two’s prompt is to set some goals for the coming year. I think that, fannish-wise, the main thing I’d like to do is make more space for writing again in my life. More specifically, I would like to finish some of my old WIPs—and even more specifically, I would really like it if I could tackle a good chunk of my list of Scum Villain WIPs—but really, the main point is writing, and taking joy in doing so.

► As the above suggests: I’m still rolling around in my Scum Villain revival feelings, yes. ♥ I’ve now finished reading the official translation—volume 4 was literally my final book of 2023, and I finished it on the final day of the year. Honestly, can’t think of a better note I could have ended it on <3 The intensity of my love for this novel knows no bounds.

► Here’s my usual gaming year in review round-up for 2023:

Games Beat in 2023
The Wishing Stone (itchio)
Sumire (Steam)
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (Steam)
I Love You! (itchio) — 4/8 Endings
Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) <3

Autumn’s Journey (itchio)*
Psychedelia of the Ashen Hawk (Steam)
Cinderella Phenomenon (Steam)* — selected routes (2/5)

* = replay

Total Games = 8 (+2 played, but not beat)
Visual Novels = 5

Other Games Played
Bravely Default (3DS)*
Palia (Switch)

And now for the questions:

A game released this year (2023): I was about to say “none”, but then it occurred to me that Palia is a thing that came out this year, so that! I’m so dumb; I literally played The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog on the day it was released, and yet it did not occur to me that would mean it was thus a 2023 release…
A game you can finish in a day: Many of them, but since I literally did play The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog in a single setting, I’ll call out that one.
A game you've been meaning to play: From the games on this list, I think Psychedelia of the Ashen Hawk probably fits this best? Either that, or my Bravely Default replay, although that one remains unfinished.
A game chosen for you by a loved one: None.
A game you've previously abandoned: None this time!
A game that intimidates you: Also none. These were all pretty chill games to play, particularly since most of them were either visual novels or had strong visual novel elements.
A game you've already solved at least once: Several, but I’ll call out Autumn’s Journey for this one, since it’s the only one I replayed 100% of.
A game with an unusual control scheme: I don’t think I would consider any of these to have a particularly unusual control scheme. (Well, not unless Sumire did; tbh, while I remember the broad strokes of that game’s story, I don’t remember enough about how it actually played to say either way.)
A game you should have played when it was first released: Palia kind of counts for this in an unusual way? In that, I signed up for the beta, but then couldn’t play it, as my computer didn’t have enough space to download the game. So I only first got to play it when it came out on the Switch recently. Not really the spirit of the question, particularly since those events both happened this year, but technically it counts!
A game you’d owned for a long time but had never played: I think Psychedelia of the Ashen Hawk is the game I’ve owned the longest from this list, but since I bought it in 2021, I don’t think it really counts as having been owned for a “long time”.
A game that has been the subject of controversy: None that I’m aware of.
An award-winning game: /cue me googling to see whether or not Pokémon Legends: Arceus has won any awards

► Still need to do my writing wrap-up—I haven’t looked what needs to go on there yet, but based on my memories, it should be a short one—but I’ve run out of time to do so before I need to go to bed, and I would like to post this entry tonight, so I’m just going to post what I have now and see about doing that + a few other things I wanted to write about next time.
