297 | 2024 gaming year in review
Yes, I realize I posted less than an hour ago! I was actually intending to go do something completely different after I posted that, but then I spontaneously sat down and wrote up this wrap-up instead. This has been split into three sections this year.
Games Beat in 2024
Cinderella Phenomenon (Steam)* — Karma’s route
Love in the Valley (itchio)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Ps4)
Stray Cats in Cozy Town (Steam)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All (PS4)
Seasons After Fall (Steam)
Deathsmiles (Xbox 360) (PS4)*
Pokémon Scarlet (Switch)
Deathsmiles II (PS4)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations (Switch)
Digimon Survive (PS4)
* = replay
Total Games Beat = 11
Number of Visual Novels = 3
Other Games Played
Palia (Switch)
Stardew Valley (Steam)
Mushroom Musume (Steam) (Demo)
Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch)
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (Steam)
Pokémon Moon (3DS)
Abandoned
INMOST (itchio)
A game released this year (2024): Stray Cats in Cozy Town!
A game you can finish in a day: Quite a few of these—in fact, there’s like four games on this list that can be played through in under an hour. Deathsmiles I & II, Stray Cats (which I spent less than 30 minutes on), Love in the Valley…
A game you've been meaning to play: I’ve wanted to play Deathsmiles II for probably over a decade at this point, but a lack of access to it has always prevented me. But my brother picked up the Deathsmiles I & II compilation for PS4 this year, so we finally got to play it for the first time.
A game chosen for you by a loved one: Oh, hey, this actually describes a lot of my gaming this year! The only reason why I played Digimon Survive and the entirety of the original Ace Attorney trilogy is because of my brother pushing the idea of our playing through those games together. (This is also why I played the final Ace Attorney game on the Switch instead of the PS4—I picked up the collection on my Switch because he canceled his Playstation subscription, and thus lost access to the trilogy.)
A game you've previously abandoned: Seasons After Fall! I played an hour or so of it back in 2019, but it wasn’t clicking with me at that moment of time, so I set it aside for another time. Which ended up being this fall!
A game that intimidates you: None of these.
A game you've already solved at least once: How many times will I replay Cinderella Phenomenon in preparation for playing Cinderella Evermore, only to fail at starting the latter game… There’s also Deathsmiles I, of course; replaying it is a classic Halloween activity for me.
A game with an unusual control scheme: I don’t think this applies to any of the games I’ve played this year.
A game you should have played when it was first released: I feel like the Ace Attorney trilogy is probably the expected answer to this, but…. I never actually ever intended to play these games? My take on them has always been “I believe they’re great games, but I don’t feel the need to play them; I already have too many other things to play”—if you’d told me at the start of 2024 that I’d get into the series, I never would have believed that! Now—I don’t regret not playing them beforehand, but I’m very glad that I did play them now.
A game you’d owned for a long time but had never played: If we’re solely talking about the games I beat for the first time, I think Seasons After Fall is the one I’ve owned the longest? But I have played that one in the past… Otherwise, most of the games I played for the first time are actually owned by my brother (I don’t own a PS4, lol, so all the PS4 games are his) or were acquired in the last two years.
A game that has been the subject of controversy: I always find this question so tricky… I think there were complaints about the technical flaws in Pokémon Scarlet? Which, very valid, but I still had a great time with that game.
An award-winning game: The other question I always struggle with, mostly because I really don’t keep up with gaming awards. Usually I just look at my list and google whichever titles strike me as being more of “prestige” titles, but none are standing out to me in that regard this year? So I’m just going to leave this question unanswered. I might replace this question with something else next year, since it’s clearly not providing something valuable for me.
Finally, this year I also tracked my video game acquisitions.
Acquired This Year
Cinderella Evermore (Steam)
Ace Attorney Trilogy (Switch) ✔
Stray Cats in Cozy Town (Steam)*✔
Spirit of the North (Steam)
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (Steam) (gift)
* = free
✔ = beat/finished
So, in total, 5-7 games (depending on how you count the Ace Attorney Trilogy). Two of them I haven't yet touched, but otherwise I either started or finished everything else. I feel good about those stats!
