088 | In which I show two exchange fics I've written, & share many, MANY food-related links

► Another day, another entry! This time, I want to share the stories that I personally wrote for White Dwarf Rabbit Hole and Press_Start, because… just because, really.

For White Dwarf Rabbit Hole:

What Remains (2518 words) by straightforwardly
Fandom: Tortall - Tamora Pierce
Relationships: Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau/George Cooper
Characters: Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, George Cooper, Thom of Trebond
Additional Tags: Roleswap
Summary: War is brewing. Alanna does what she can.

Roleswap!AU where Alanna is the Rogue and George is the knight-in-training.)

This fic was so much fun. My recipient had a ton of fun prompts, but the idea of an Alanna and George roleswap grabbed my imagination so thoroughly that I couldn’t even conceive of writing anything else— and they hadn’t even been the characters that I matched on. There are a few small things that bug me about the final result, and I would have liked to have been able to stuff in more of Thom & Alanna’s altered backstory, but overall, I was quite pleased with this fic.

And for Press_Start:

Tempered (8016 words) by straightforwardly
Fandom: Hakuouki
Relationships: Nagumo Kaoru & Yukimura Chizuru, Saito Hajime (Hakuouki)/Yukimura Chizuru
Characters: Yukimura Chizuru, Nagumo Kaoru, Saitou Hajime
Additional Tags: Reconciliation, Illness & Recovery, Mentions of Canonical Character Death
Summary:
When Chizuru stepped outside that morning, there were footprints— too small to be Saitou’s— pressed into the snow outside her home.

Post-Game. Chizuru's living a peaceful life together with Saitou, until she stumbles across someone from her past.

Unlike with White Dwarf Rabbit Hole, it took me a while to settle on which prompt to go with for that one. There was just so many that called to me. In the end, I decided to derive my inspiration for my recipient’s request for a Kaoru & Chizuru reunion, and their list of H/C tropes that they enjoyed.

I’ve never written for Hakuouki before, and getting into the characters’ heads was quite a challenge. There were definitely times where I was tempted to just burn the whole story down to the ground, but now, although there are a decent number of patches where I wish I’d edited more thoroughly, I think I’m ultimately pleased with the result. Plus, my recipient seemed to enjoy it, which is all I can ask, really.

► So, I said that I’d do a link-dump this post, but now that I’m actually here, I… have no idea how I should start. I need to organize everything somehow, but there’s just so much, and just, agh. I think I just need to dive in.

► Let’s start with recipes! I had a craving for tomato soup the other day, despite it usually not being my thing, and so tried out this recipe for dinner. It...technically tasted good, and my family liked it fine— I might even make it again— but it wasn’t the flavour I was looking for.

Looking up recipes for that did lead me to other soups / autumn-y dishes that I’d like to try out, though! Here’s some of the ones that intrigued me:

And some of the other recipes that I’ve been slowly gathering up from other google searches &/or the few food blogs I follow, vaguely ordered by what type of food (or drink) it is:

*If you’re curious about the ginger tea thing— it was inspired by the fic I was writing for Press_Start. I’ve never had ginger tea before, but it came up with I was doing research for that fic, and now I’m curious.

As for things I’ve actually made: I made these pumpkin muffins (though I threw in some banana chips in the mix) and these apple scones (though in the interest of using up our garden’s produce, I turned them into zucchini-apple scones) recently, and both were absolutely delicious.

Oh! And I made this watermelon sangria for the American Independence Day, and it was also very, very good. I loved how straightforward the recipe was, and the lack of added sugar.

► A few other food-related links that aren’t recipes:

► As for non-food-related links: I first saw this on the Yuletide fandom promotion post (I think), and while the other tweets from this account don’t do much for me, this one made me laugh:

► And I think I’m going to leave this here for now— I still have plenty of links to go through, but I’ve made an indent at least, and I’m tired now. I didn’t quite get to talking about Yuletide proper, but oh well. Until next time.

Man, those apple scones sound delicious, and pretty easy too... Never made scones before, but I think I'll definitely have to give those a try.
