292 | more recs! two song covers + 8 fic recs
► I follow a decent number of cover artists on YouTube (and thus obviously also regularly get recommended covers from artists I don’t follow), and the last… two or three months or so, I’ve been really enjoying listening to covers of songs from Epic the Musical. This all started with annapantsu’s genderbent cover of Ruthlessness, which probably isn’t the first cover I heard, but it’s the first one that made me sit up and pay attention to what I was hearing. I really like it!
I haven’t heard most of the songs from the musical, nor have I checked out the original (or indeed, even investigated in what form it exists in), though I probably will eventually—but for now, I’m just really enjoying the piecemeal (and tbh, mostly genderbent! which I’m so so here for) way I’m absorbing the canon.
I bring this up because at some point, YouTube recommended me Loganne’s roleswap cover of Suffering, and I am currently mildly obsessed with it. First of all, I’m super into this roleswap. But more than that—and what makes it stand out from other gender-or-roleswap covers of this song I’ve heard—is the way this is sung. (By which I mean the way their voices convey emotions and tone; I am very much not the person to go to for questions of musical quality.)
Like, every time I hear the siren’s insincere “oh no”, I have to laugh, and the only thing that rivals my fondness for that part is the way Penelope sings, “the things I do for you”. Though I do also find the way she sings “you know I’m too shy” super cute!
tl;dr I really enjoy this cover and wanted to both record my feelings about it at this point in time and also rec it.
► And while I’m at it, have some fic recs from my November reading so far, organized by alphabetical order by fandom. I’ve been on a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh kick (with a side of Wuthering Heights, since I also reread that novel early in the month), so those comprise the bulk of the recs.
Fandoms included: Fire Emblem Awakening, Stardew Valley, Wuthering Heights, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters

cut. (Stardew Valley, Abigail/Emily/Haley/Leah/Maru/Penny, 3.2K)
Just because something bad happened, it doesn't mean you can exit the game without saving.
*
Gazebos (Fire Emblem Awakening, Gaius/Lissa, 1.8K)
"Gaius," Lissa hissed. "You are ruining my escape plan."
*
Love for Hate (Wuthering Heights, Catherine + Isabella + Cathy, 1.4K)
Vignettes from the points of view of the three main female characters.rec notes - the characterization here is just so !!!
stories in the stars (Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff/Catherine, <1K)
An entry from the diary of Catherine Earnshaw, circa November 1777.rec notes - In the book, Catherine feels like such a cipher to me, and so I really liked how this fic gave her more of her own voice, in a way that rang true to me.
Trapped and Fluttering (Wuthering Heights, Hareton/Cathy, 1.8K)
Hareton helps Cathy rescue another poor creature from being trapped at the Heights.
*
ficus sycomorus (Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Shizuka/Kisara, 10K)
Sometimes a family is you, your brother’s mortal enemy, and his reincarnated dragon soulmate from a previous life.rec notes - aka the fic that kicked off my most recent round of YGO obsession. It’s not the main focus, but I love this fic’s interpretation of Kaiba & Kisara as platonic soulmates.
Agency/Communion (Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Kaiba/Atem, 26K)
Seto Kaiba brings back more from the afterlife than initially planned. He proceeds to deal with absolutely none of it.
This story contains a lot of arguing.
Or: Five Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Punching a Hole in the Fabric of Reality, Depression, and Card Game Tournamentrec notes - This is technically a WIP, in that it’s sitting at 6/8 chapters, but tbh if it weren’t for that I would’ve thought it was finished. This is such a funny fic, oh my god; I was constantly losing it while reading. Chapter Five in particular is a gift, by which I mean it roasted me personally and I couldn’t even complain because I was laughing too much.
I'm Not Your Salvation (Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Jounouchi & Anzu, 4.4K)
Joey didn’t think about her much at first, except to dislike her.
Jounouchi and Anzu get off to a rough start. This is, however, only the start.rec notes - Do mind the warnings on this one. That being said, I’ve such a deep nostalgic affection for the early manga canon, and I really enjoyed the way this fic dives into all the messy ugliness we see from the characters (particularly Jounouchi) during that period of time. I’m also more than a little obsessed with this fic’s decision to interpret Jounouchi as a biracial character, and the ways that plays into the way society perceives him and his delinquent traits. It works so well!
