A collection of fic recs based on my January/February fic reading, this time (unfortunately) without commentary, if only because I’ve been sitting on this version of this post for over a week now and I have the sneaking suspicion that if I wait until I have the energy to write up the commentary that I wanted to include, it’s never actually going to be posted.

Fandoms included: EPIC the Musical, Fallen London, Greek Mythology, Late Bronze Age Collapse RPF (if you know, you know), Miraculous Ladybug (99% lovesquare), Much Ado About Nothing, Naruto, Northanger Abbey, Othello, Stardew Valley, TAZ Ethersea

Including, but definitely not limited to, my recs from this past Yuletide. (Though, iirc, I still haven’t looked at the Madness collection yet.)

Fandoms included: Ace Attorney, Dracula, A Guide for Young Ladies Entering the Service of the Fairies, Hamlet, Mansfield Park, MDZS/CQL, Miraculous Ladybug, My Dress-Up Darling, Petshop of Horrors, Stardew Valley, Valdemar

I have read… so much fic this month. It’s high time for another recs post! A large portion is for Ace Attorney, as I finished the original trilogy for the first time earlier this month and promptly binged a truly ridiculous amount of fic.

Organized alphabetically, first by fandom, then by title. Fandoms included are: Ace Attorney, Crossover - Death Note/Ace Attorney, Death Note, Hamlet, Pokémon (Main Games), Scum Villain

► I follow a decent number of cover artists on YouTube (and thus obviously also regularly get recommended covers from artists I don’t follow), and the last… two or three months or so, I’ve been really enjoying listening to covers of songs from Epic the Musical. This all started with annapantsu’s genderbent cover of Ruthlessness, which probably isn’t the first cover I heard, but it’s the first one that made me sit up and pay attention to what I was hearing. I really like it!

I haven’t heard most of the songs from the musical, nor have I checked out the original (or indeed, even investigated in what form it exists in), though I probably will eventually—but for now, I’m just really enjoying the piecemeal (and tbh, mostly genderbent! which I’m so so here for) way I’m absorbing the canon.

I bring this up because at some point, YouTube recommended me Loganne’s roleswap cover of Suffering, and I am currently mildly obsessed with it. do songs have spoilers? )

tl;dr I really enjoy this cover and wanted to both record my feelings about it at this point in time and also rec it.

► And while I’m at it, have some fic recs from my November reading so far, organized by alphabetical order by fandom. I’ve been on a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh kick (with a side of Wuthering Heights, since I also reread that novel early in the month), so those comprise the bulk of the recs.

Reading: just finished the final volume of Thousand Autumns, and have now started a nonfiction read about Artisans in early imperial China.
Listening: High Rollers Aerois, ofc
Playing: getting very close to beating Pokémon Scarlet!
Watching: keeping up with my usual YouTube subscriptions, but beyond that, nothing at the moment
Writing: nothing actively, but fingers crossed that I change that later tonight!

► As stated above, I’ve finally finished the official translation of Thousand Autumns! Also marking the first time I’ve read the story in its entirety. I freely admit to having neglected so many things in my life in the past week or so due to this novel—including, memorably, my deciding to read “just the opening chapter” of the final volume before going to bed last night, and instead staying up way too late reading all of the main story + the epilogues. I’m currently very tired, but also very happy. more beneath the cut )

►It took me a hot minute, but I finally got around to reading [personal profile] slashmarks’s new Bellatrix-related WIP (this time Bellatrix/Hermione, featuring time travel!!), and, unsurprisingly, I fell madly in love with it, so now I’ve come here to make a rec for it! It’s currently at 17 out of a planned 19 chapters, and the most recently posted chapter ended at a point that left me screaming. It’s great <3 Though do please do note the content warnings mentioned in the author’s note.
swallow some of their history (Harry Potter, Bellatrix/Hermione, currently 94K)
A clash in the Time Room in the Department of Mysteries sends Hermione back in time thirty-three years, from 1996 to 1963. There, she's forced to contend with a drastically different pre-war Wizarding World where blood-based prejudice and rigid class structures rule the day, and maybe worse, Bellatrix Black as a classmate. But getting involved with Bellatrix Black in any capacity means dealing with her family's problems, too.

► I’d originally intended to make a recs post for good horror fics I’ve read recently, in honor of the season, but when I was looking over my spreadsheet just right now, it turns out… I’d actually already recced all save two of the ones that I had in mind? And two recs do not a themed post make. So, instead, have a trio of MDZS/CQL fic recs, two of which I would consider horror or featuring horror elements, and one which was just a very, very good read.

► The other day, I shared some little 3D ghost paintings I made on a discord server I’m in, and a comment someone made made me realize that I could share them here too.

► Going to leave this entry off here, but for accountability purposes I’d like to note that in the near future I’d very much like to make gaming thoughts posts for: Seasons After Fall (which I beat earlier this week), Pokémon Scarlet (which I’m nearly finished with! <3), and the games I’ve been playing with my brother this year. And, as always, I also have more High Rollers: Aerois thoughts to share at some point as well. But that’s for another time. ♥

Have a jumble of miscellaneous fic recs from my last two months of fic reading! A decent number are from the semi-recent Jump Scare and Seasons of Drabbles collections; others are just things that showed up in my inbox or that I came across through other means. In total: 11 recs across 9 fandoms.

Fandoms included are: Greek Mythology, MDZS/CQL, Naruto, Pokémon Legends Arceus, Scum Villain, A Song of Ice & Fire, Stardew Valley, Survive Mola Mola!, Till the End of the Moon.

► I signed up for [community profile] pokepodproject today! Rather last minute—sign-ups end tonight and I'm going to be spending much of the day away from home—but I’ve been wary of overcommitting myself. A part of me really wanted to offer to write three fics, but I don’t want to overdo it, so I just offered two, chosen from four potential Pokémon. I’m telling myself that I can always pick up pinch hits if I find that I can and want to do more!

I was also careful to brainstorm concepts that I thought could fit into the 100-1000 wordcount limit while choosing which Pokémon to offer. So hopefully that will help too, in the spirit of not overdoing it/not overloading my personal stress levels. I just think this is the coolest concept and I’m very excited for it.

[community profile] justmarriedexchange revealed recently. I didn’t participate, and I haven’t actually looked through much of the collection beyond throwing a few fics in my marked-for-later list, but…! There is one exception to that, and that’s this fic, which I just had to read immediately. And I’m glad I did, because I really liked it!
lips for a god to worship (Greek Mythology, Artemis/Iphigenia, 1.5K)
Iphigenia submits.

To the ropes passed about her thin wrists that chafe at the skin. To the cloth, fragrant with dust and her own scent, forced into her mouth and kept there to prevent her speaking a dying curse. To the cool touch of a blade rising from her belly to her throat, the peeling back of her saffron robes like the butchering of an animal.

She is the animal, a sacrifice to stir the winds.
Truly gorgeous prose, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Iphigenia and Artemis here.

► The above fic references a poem (always a winner, in my book)— “Iphigenia” by Edwin Arnold. I had to look it up immediately, of course, and I rather liked it, so I’m copying it over here for my own records. beneath the cut )

Dropping by with a lot of recs for Battleship 2024! I had so much fun this year—I was on Team Crystal, and it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had with Battleship, which is saying something, considering that it’s been my favorite fandom event since I first joined in back in 2022!

(…I also sacrificed far more sleep to the game than I ever have before;;; The number of nights with <5 hours of sleep were… not nonzero. But each and every one of them was absolutely worth it <3)

We’re still in the anon period currently—it’s a two week anon period rather than the usual one, which I was grateful for, because with a collection of over 2000 works*, including four million words of fic, over 300 pieces of art, and nearly 200 podfics, I definitely needed that time to make my way through it!

(*More than Yuletide! Created in a barely-longer-than-two-weeks period! We truly all lost our collective minds/chill this year, and it was great <3)

I “only” read about 200K of those words, according to my reading & media tracking spreadsheet, but it still took some days to get through it all, haha. And who knows how much art I looked at…

But there truly were so many amazing gems in the collection. For the sake of making this long list somewhat comprehensible, I’m going to be splitting this up into several sections: my gifts, then my personal top three works (both fic and art) that made me absolutely lose my mind in the best way, then the rest of my fic recs, and finally the rest of my art recs, all organized alphabetically by fandom.

*

First off, my gifts! more beneath the cut )

*

Next up, my top favorites. This is not to say that I didn’t love and adore the other things I’m reccing below as well, but these three things truly made me lose my mind. So much (internal) screaming and (external) flailing and oh my god, I can’t believe these were created in this short period of time??? also beneath the cut )

*

Now, for the other fic recs! In alphabetical order by fandom. I originally wanted to make a short comment about each piece like I did with the art recs below, but I’ve run out of steam, so please just have a simple list instead.beneath the cut )

*

Finally, the remaining art recs, including some I was very tempted to include in the top recs section, before I decided that I would restrict that section to only three works.

This is unfortunately incomplete (and heavily weighted towards OW), in that I foolishly didn’t think to save links to the artworks I looked at when I first started making my way through the collection, and now feel rather ;;;;; at the thought of digging through my history to find them. But even with those restrictions, I found a lot to recommend!

► I just spent the whole of the past month moving! It has been a stressful time, though I think the worst of it is over. I still need to update to my new address in a few more places, but otherwise, all that’s left is finishing unpacking, organizing, some furniture building, etc. Which will take a while, but I’m not in a rush. I got my kitchen and bathroom in working order, and plan on tackling rebuilding my wardrobe/organizing that this weekend, and everything else after can take its own time.

► Me being me, I dealt with my feelings about Akira Toriyama’s death by diving into reading DBZ fic, despite it not being a “fandom-y” kind of canon for me. One very positive side-effect of that is that it led to me finally reading Ki-Blind by Sholio, which has been on my to-read list for years. Possibly even a full decade at this point, though I can’t say for sure. I know I had the FFN version of the fic bookmarked on my old laptop, which broke over five years ago now.

My verdict: 10/10, fully worthy of all the glowing recs it receives. It really captures the heart of the canon in an amazing way, like it’s another saga of the anime, and I appreciated the way it gave the side characters that canon half-forgot their time to shine.

► As of this week, I’ve also tentatively started a rewatch of DBZ. (Well. Actually, I watched the first episode of Dragonball first, remembered that I don’t actually like Dragonball, then switched to DBZ instead. Which had the interesting side-effect of me realizing all the parallels that are built into the opening episode of each respective series.)

I’m only a few episodes in, I’m not really fully focusing on it when I do have it on, and I don’t know if I’m actually going to rewatch the whole thing, but nonetheless, I’ve been enjoying my time with it. It makes for good background entertainment while I’m journaling or crocheting.

► I’ve made it to episode 24 of High Rollers: Aerois. Don’t have too much to say, but I did make a couple of notes in the file I keep for dw updates. brief thoughts beneath the cut )

My desire to live surrounded by a bamboo forest of my very own versus the knowledge that bamboo is an invasive species…. /a moot point since I live in an apartment anyway

Somewhat related, but over the past week, I’ve fallen back down into the Scum Villain rabbit hole, and it feels, quite frankly, amazing. I’ve never loved a canon, fandom, or ship as much as I loved Scum Villain / Bingqiu back in 2019-2020, and it’s so so good to experience those feelings again <3

Of course, this meant that I needed to go revisit the canon, and so I’ve been rereading it—though quite slowly, as I’m reading the official translation (for the first time!), which I only own in physical form. Since most of my reading is done via my phone or ereader during commutes and lunch breaks, this means that rereading requires me carving out extra reading time while at home, which has been slowing me down quite a bit. As is the fact that I’m reading it at like, half my usual reading speed—I keep needing to take a moment to breathe or flail before continuing due to the overwhelming feelings this book inspires in me.

So I’m only about halfway through the second volume now, but I’m really deeply enjoying it. And I’m loving the translation! I was a bit worried—while I remembered appreciating faelicy’s retranslation (and also found their meta quite thought-provoking), there was a stiffness to it at times that I didn't enjoy. But—and maybe this is because there were two translators on this project—I didn’t notice that quality at all in this version. It’s smooth all the way down, and I am loving every second of reading it. Scum Villain, my beloved <3

This does mean that I had a problem with my commute/lunch break reading schedule last week—couldn’t read Scum Villain, but did not have the headspace to read anything not Scum Villain—which I resolved by using that time to reread Feynite’s classic I Wish You Were My Husband, which imo still holds up. Plus some other old faves, though IWYWMH took up most of my reading time.

Ridiculously, Scum Villain was filling up my “listening to something while doing chores” time last week as well… last Sunday, I was rereading some of my own fic for the fandom, and noticed that at some point, I’d approved an inspiration link for a podfic of We Never Dreamed These Walls. On a whim, I wandered over to read the comments left on that podfic, and a lot of them were praising the podficcer’s SQQ’s voice, particularly during the moments when he starts flailing in his internal narrative, and despite the fact that I usually never listen to podfics (or audiobooks—I’ve disliked the experience of people reading to me every since I was a child old enough to read on my own), I got curious.

And. Oh my god. This podficcer did such a good job?? The person in question is [archiveofourown.org profile] So2Voice, and here’s the link to the podfic. Just, oh my god. I am obsessed. I would call this narcissistic of me, lol, except for the fact that listening to my own fic read aloud made me very aware of all the flaws in the writing, flaws which I usually don’t notice when reading it—the obsession comes almost purely from how much I enjoyed this person’s reading of it.

Their voice for SQQ’s internal dialogue truly is so deeply truly perfect?? Admittedly, their voices for LBH & SQQ during the actual dialogue don’t match up at all for how I hear them in my head, but that was a minor thing compared to how much I loved everything else, and I did get used to it by the end. And the (usually cat-related) bloopers were also just so so delightful. And how they did the System’s voice!! I was literally standing there thinking, “god I wish I’d included more interjections from the System in this fic” solely because I enjoyed hearing how they did that aspect.

I loved this so much that I went to their works page in the hopes that they’d also done podfics for any of my favorite fics from this fandom, but unfortunately, all of their other podfics were either for fics I’d disliked, my NOTP, or fics I’m unfamiliar with. But still, absolutely subscribed to them now (who knows what the future will bring, after all!), and absolutely obsessed. (Which remains wild to me, considering the aforementioned nearly life-long dislike for listening to people read aloud, but here we are, apparently??)

In any case, I’m having a great time revisiting this canon, rereading old favorite fics, slowly discovering new fics, and casting thoughtful looks at the mountain of WIPs I’d left unfinished. Who knows how long this revival of feelings is going to last, but I’m going to enjoy every second of it as long as I can <3 <3 <3

Reading: Just finished up Star Mother by Charlie N. Holmberg & greatly enjoyed it.
Listening: High Rollers: Aerois.
Playing: Still Bravely Default!
Watching: n/a
Writing: An overly ambitious project for FIAB. Fingers crossed that I can manage it!

► Brief update on my High Rollers: Aerois progress: mild spoilers )

► So, with Bravely Default, I haven’t actually got all that much further since my last update, in that I’m still working on the Vampire Castle Sub-Scenario. mild spoilers, maybe? )

► The other thing I did on train trip back home was read Thaumaturgical Studies, a FMA/Harry Potter crossover fic—WIP, currently 58K, last updated in April of this year. Despite it including one of my crossover pet peeves (aka, trying to pretend that the setting of a secondary world canon—in this case, FMA—is actually somewhere in our world, in order to make the crossover happen), it still really worked for me, and I’d recommend it.

It did throw me into an unexpected FMA mood. I’m not sure if I’ve ever talked about this under this username, but FMA (specifically, the 2003 anime) and Inuyasha were my very first fandoms. It’s hard to say which of the two was truly the “first”—there’s arguments to be made for the both of them. But though I’m still very fond of FMA (and did eventually watch and enjoy Brotherhood as well), it’s not something I’ve engaged with on a fannish level in a very long time.

I’ve collected some fics to read since then, though of the handful I’ve tried out so far, most of them haven’t quite clicked with me enough to rec. The one exception to this was a reread—Good Intentions (1.9K, outsider POV in the form of Ed’s granddaughter, set many years after the end of the 2003 anime).

I did also come across* some interesting meta about Ed’s automail and his identity as a disabled character (with a part two here), which gave me a lot to chew over. This is definitely not the lens I was viewing the character through back when I was first introduced to the series at 11 or 12 years old, so it’s been interesting to have that shift in perspective.

*I think it was linked by the author of the HP crossover fic?

So that’s been my past week in fandom in a nutshell.

Writing: One of my FIAB assignments, finally.

As the above implies, I am still deep in this strange and unexpected MDZS rabbithole. Since my last update, I’ve picked up a new ship, and have also begun exploring the world of Nie Huaisang-centric fics, aka the character who probably would have been my fave had Jiang Cheng not taken that position in my heart so fully and decisively early on.

► I’ve gone down the most unexpected rabbit hole recently. MDZS has always been my least favorite MXTX novel (despite also being my first) and I’ve only read it the one time, not because of anything related to its actual quality, but rather because it features one of my biggest squicks. (Namely, zombies.) I’ve also never seen The Untamed, and never intend to it; it just doesn’t strike my interest. And yet. Since last Thursday, I’ve found myself obsessively reading MDZS/CQL fic?? And having all sorts of feelings?? And even considering rereading the novel despite knowing what a bad idea that would be? I don’t even know what happened here. Who knows how long this will last, but until then, have some recs:

► On a non-MDZS note, I’ve also been replaying Bravely Default lately. I first/last played it back in 2015 and was deeply obsessed with it, putting over 100 hours into the game, but I never got around to playing the sequel despite having purchased it within a year of its release. So I decided to finally do a replay of the first game to refresh my memory of it, before moving on to finally play the sequel.

Currently, I’m at the beginning of chapter three. more beneath the cut )

Reading: Plenty! More than anything else, tbh. I’m participating in the Autumn Equinox of the Orilium Readathon, and having a delightful time of it. I only have two books left to read for my main calling, but am also eyeing some of the side quests. We’ll see!
Listening: Fic Clique, mostly.
Playing: Most recently, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which I beat (what I have osmosis-ed is only the first ending) at the end of June, but which I’ve been picking up sporadically ever since with the vague intention of 100%-ing it one day. It’s genuinely one of my all-time favorite games at this point. Otherwise, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a new visual novel after I finish this post, so maybe that.
Watching: Last weekend, I finished Till the End of the Moon, which sparked the first true fannish passion I’ve felt in almost two years. So that was exciting! Considering a rewatch, but am also considering checking out some of the other cdramas on my to-watch list.
Writing: Nothing, though I am pleased with my output for this year’s round of Battleship.

on twitter )

Though in the interest of not fading away like a fannish ghost, I am going to make an effort to have a little bit more of a presence online again. I have a lot less free time than I used to, but I feel like a goal of “at the bare minimum, some kind of fannish monthly round-up post on dw” could be achievable if I prioritize it? We’ll see.

► Have some scattered fic recs from the last two months of fic reading. Some were from WIP updates; quite a few were from Battleship.)

various fandoms, beneath the cut )

► On that note, I did participate in Battleship this year, and got four genuinely excellent gifts: two for Naruto, and two for Stardew Valley. I feel like both fandom pairs had fics that paralleled one another in some way. One of my Naruto gifts tackles a classic time travel concept that never gets old no matter how many takes on it I read, while the other has an approach that felt so fresh and new that I was breathless while reading it. For Stardew Valley, I got one fic for each of my Abigail ships, one featuring a sweet established relationship while the other features an imo fantastic depiction of a first love and the thrill of realizing your feelings are returned for the first time. It just all felt very balanced and satisfying to me!

Seven New Ways (Naruto, Izuna & Sakura, 6.2K)

Meanwhile, Kisame’s pretty sure he’s never met someone who’s as intriguing a mix of truth and lies as the pink haired women named simply Sakura.

A Life of Rock 'n' Roll (Stardew Valley, Abigail/Sebastian, 3.6K)

Brave New Girl (Stardew Valley, Abigail/Haley, <1K)

Just a quick entry—I wanted to share my lovely Yuletide gifts! I got rather spoiled this year (which I feel slightly guilty about, since I had to default on my own assignment), and I really want to share them.

I don't think either of them require much or any canon knowledge to enjoy—the Gris fic in particular would read very, very well as an original fantasy story, and I heartily recommend it to anyone.
