► I follow a decent number of cover artists on YouTube (and thus obviously also regularly get recommended covers from artists I don’t follow), and the last… two or three months or so, I’ve been really enjoying listening to covers of songs from Epic the Musical. This all started with annapantsu’s genderbent cover of Ruthlessness, which probably isn’t the first cover I heard, but it’s the first one that made me sit up and pay attention to what I was hearing. I really like it!

I haven’t heard most of the songs from the musical, nor have I checked out the original (or indeed, even investigated in what form it exists in), though I probably will eventually—but for now, I’m just really enjoying the piecemeal (and tbh, mostly genderbent! which I’m so so here for) way I’m absorbing the canon.

I bring this up because at some point, YouTube recommended me Loganne’s roleswap cover of Suffering, and I am currently mildly obsessed with it. do songs have spoilers? )

tl;dr I really enjoy this cover and wanted to both record my feelings about it at this point in time and also rec it.

► And while I’m at it, have some fic recs from my November reading so far, organized by alphabetical order by fandom. I’ve been on a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh kick (with a side of Wuthering Heights, since I also reread that novel early in the month), so those comprise the bulk of the recs.

Fandoms included: Fire Emblem Awakening, Stardew Valley, Wuthering Heights, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters beneath the cut )

► There’s a DW friending meme going on over at [personal profile] snickfic’s journal! I’ve already seen a few familiar names from my flist over there, but I thought I’d mention it, just in case. (Also— hello to the new people on my flist!)

(..I wrote the above ~two days ago, and wow, that friending meme has exploded in popularity since then. It’s wild seeing how many new people have come to DW! I love DW dearly— it’s the fandom-style that suits me best— but this was still unexpected for me, even taking what’s going on with Tumblr into account.)

► I ended up spending the weekend rereading the Gokusen manga. (Well— I started and did most of the reread over the weekend, but I didn’t actually finish it until today, to be precise.) This is the second time that I’ve read it, and I think I loved it even more this time around. It’s such a comfort read for me. ♥ And I still liked Shin/Yankumi as much as I did before— I wondered if I would, since I usually bounce off of student/teacher pairings, especially in modern day settings. But nope, they continue to be the (excellent, excellent) exception to that rule.

► I’ve also been listening to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist of Roses soundtrack quite a bit lately, and ugh, I wish I’d found out what this game was about before I moved so far away from my favorite used games shop (and away from easy access to used English games in general). I’d heard of the title before, of course, but somehow I had it in my head that it was just another YGO game like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force or that one GBA game that takes place during Battle City (both of which I’ve played, the latter of which I spent countless hours on as a kid). But the War of Roses with Yu-Gi-Oh characters is exactly the kind of weirdness that I’m here for! (Pokemon Conquest—a game that I do, thankfully, own, though I haven’t played it yet—has a similar kind of draw for me.)

► And while I’m talking about YGO games, there’s a Monster World event going on in Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links! ...Featuring Yami Bakura, with no Standard Edition Bakura in sight. Poor guy. ._. a bit more beneath the cut )

► The other day, I was reminded that the song Tropes Are Forever exists, and now it’s stuck in my head, ha. ♥ (...And I just realized that the original post has a download link. brb, adding this to my iTunes.)

► I been toying around with the idea of replaying Star Stealing Prince again for a few months now, but kept putting it off because “I should really focus on cutting down my backlog”! But then I decided that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to refresh my memory for exchange-requesting purposes*, so I finally started that replay.

* Especially since I kind of want to request something from this game + one that I remember even less of for [community profile] femslashex (yes, I know I said I wasn’t going to do any more exchanges until Trick or Treat, shhhh). So of course I started off with the game that’s both shorter and that I remember better...

Right now, I’m at the very start of chapter two. more beneath the cut )

I beat Transistor over the weekend. That was… a really good game. Even before you get to the story, it’s just gorgeously designed: lovely graphics, an amazing soundtrack (example: the song that plays during the first boss battle *_*), and one of my favorite battle systems in a long time. cut for potential spoilers + length )

► For some reason, I have been watching a lot of AMVs lately. That's something I haven't done much of since... high school, maybe? It's made me realize that my familiarity with newer anime is really lacking, but otherwise, it's been pretty enjoyable. Here are some I've liked:Hmm... I thought there were more than that. I know there was at least one more PMMM one, and a Princess Tutu one, but I'm digging through my bookmarks right now and can't find links to them anymore. That's a bit frustrating.

While I'm at it, I'll link to some non-anime videos I've watched as well.

  • Les Misérables: Radioactive (yes, I know, but this video made me SO emotional, despite the overused song)
  • Disney/Non-Disney Animated Films: Gods & Monsters (the quality varies, but some of those edits are amazing—especially the last one)

► Speaking of videos... I've been on the verge of unsuscribing from AVBytes for months now— they just haven't been posting anything particularly interesting lately, in my opinion— but I fond myself somewhat fond of the Disney Villains Musical. The only real downside is that I didn't really like how Maleficent explained her reasoning for cursing Aurora.

► Another video I liked that doesn't quite fit the above categories was this trailer reimagining Frozen as a horror film. I don't like horror, but I kind of want someone to fanfic this.

► Finally, some music, all Frozen-related, mainly so I can clear out the rest of the video links from my bookmarks. I quite liked this male cover of "Let It Go", as well as this one of someone singing it in German. A few months back, when I was super stressed by school, one of my friends also gave me this link of someone singing "Let It Go" in the voices of 21 Disney & Pixar characters. Most of his imitations are quite good, I must admit.

► This entry is shorter than I'd planned, but there are already so many links... I think I'll end this here.

► So, about a month ago, I went to see Frozen in theaters with a friend of mine. In short, I really, really loved it, and have been listening to a million different versions of "Let It Go" ever since. (There were other songs I really liked too, but it doesn't seem as though they caught on in the same way, so "Let It Go" it is.)

Some of my favorites include this male cover (if you want a direct youtube link, that's here, but I liked the pretty art associated with the tumblr link), the German version, the Danish version, and this ASL video (which, while not being different vocally, still is pretty awesome to look at), to name a few.

► Keeping with the Frozen semi-theme of this post... most of the articles about it that I've run into I've been irritated by, but I did like this analysis of the film, and wanted to link to it. It just hit a lot of points I felt strongly about, and articulated why I felt that way much better than I ever could have done.

Oh, and I just ran across The Frozen Girl: Visual Cues and Evil Femininity, which is another article about the movie that I liked.

► Speaking of music, I am kind of really in love with this (apparently) 1920's version of Lana del Ray's "Young and Beautiful". I have mixed feelings about the 2013 film version of The Great Gatsby, but I did really love both this song and the scene it was in, and now it's gotten even better.

► I think I make it clear that I fangirl Zeiva really, really hard. So when I found out that they decided to do a Kickstarter for their next game... well, I'm feeling so-so about what we know about the plot, and I'm still super-tempted to throw thirty dollars down, because Zeiva. They've never let me down. Besides, the second and third stretch goals sound absolutely AMAZING.
