► Last night, I finished reading volume two of the official translation for Thousand Autumns, the end of which is fairly close to where I believe I left off with the fan translation. It actually surprises me that I was only this far into the novel—I’d assumed spoilers beneath the cut )

► More High Rollers Aerois thoughts! Currently, I just finished episode 91. beneath the cut )

► Finally, I have a poem to share— “The Star-Bright Hour” by Betty Alver.

I came across it because I was actually titling a fic after an excerpt from a different poet of hers, and wanted to reread the line in its original context, but was too lazy to dig out the book I originally found it in. So I tried to to see if I could find it online, but did not meaning that I had to go to my shelves anyway. However, in the process I found another poem by her which I liked and now want to share here.

► I do also have some writing thoughts I want to take the time to reflect on (mostly in regard to [community profile] iddyiddybangbang, which I successfully completed for the first time this year!), but that's for another post, I think.

► I signed up for [community profile] pokepodproject today! Rather last minute—sign-ups end tonight and I'm going to be spending much of the day away from home—but I’ve been wary of overcommitting myself. A part of me really wanted to offer to write three fics, but I don’t want to overdo it, so I just offered two, chosen from four potential Pokémon. I’m telling myself that I can always pick up pinch hits if I find that I can and want to do more!

I was also careful to brainstorm concepts that I thought could fit into the 100-1000 wordcount limit while choosing which Pokémon to offer. So hopefully that will help too, in the spirit of not overdoing it/not overloading my personal stress levels. I just think this is the coolest concept and I’m very excited for it.

[community profile] justmarriedexchange revealed recently. I didn’t participate, and I haven’t actually looked through much of the collection beyond throwing a few fics in my marked-for-later list, but…! There is one exception to that, and that’s this fic, which I just had to read immediately. And I’m glad I did, because I really liked it!
lips for a god to worship (Greek Mythology, Artemis/Iphigenia, 1.5K)
Iphigenia submits.

To the ropes passed about her thin wrists that chafe at the skin. To the cloth, fragrant with dust and her own scent, forced into her mouth and kept there to prevent her speaking a dying curse. To the cool touch of a blade rising from her belly to her throat, the peeling back of her saffron robes like the butchering of an animal.

She is the animal, a sacrifice to stir the winds.
Truly gorgeous prose, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Iphigenia and Artemis here.

► The above fic references a poem (always a winner, in my book)— “Iphigenia” by Edwin Arnold. I had to look it up immediately, of course, and I rather liked it, so I’m copying it over here for my own records. beneath the cut )

Reading: The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite—about 83% through, according to my ereader. I’m not fully sold on the romance, but it has enough other things going for it that I’m enjoying it nonetheless.
Listening: Just caught up on Fic Clique; now I’m vaguely bouncing around from podcast to podcast, trying to figure out which to catch up on/start next.
Playing: The Amber Throne! An indie(?) rpg with a really lovely art direction—I’ve owned it on Steam via HumbleBundle since 2016, I think.
Watching: Nothing, unless historical sewing videos on youtube count. (They probably should, come to think of it.)
Writing: Currently focusing on an OW piece inspired by one of my own Relationshipping requests from this past year.

► On the last day of the year, while at work, I was thinking about Zbigniew Herbert’s “The Elegy of Fortinbras”—which some of you might remember is a poem that I have a lot of feelings about. I did a reread of Hamlet sometime in mid-December, which made this poem stick in the forefront of my mind even more than usual.

Anyways, as I was thinking about it, I was suddenly struck by the line, I could never think of your hands without smiling. For the first time, it occurred to me: that’s kind of an intimate thing to be thinking about?

► On the first day of this year, I read a short story by T. Kingfisher that I hadn’t been aware of before — “Metal Like Blood in the Dark”. Unsurprisingly, I loved it!

I wanted to copy down some of my favorite lines beneath the cut, but… spoilers, so I do recommend reading the short story first before clicking on it, assuming that you click on it at all—you really don’t need to, as this is very much something I’m copying down just for my own sake, not for anyone else’s enjoyment, and I don’t know if anyone else would get anything out of it.

I might be posting this too early, as Day 2 of the Snowflake Challenge should be coming up and it could be a prompt that I’d want to fill—but oh well. If that ends up being the case, making a second entry in the same day won’t hurt anyone.

Have a post full of various Rose of Segunda (and, specifically, Frederique/Iolanthe) things that I’ve been thinking about over the past couple of days! beneath the cut )

NEXT TIME: I really need to get around to talking about my love of the bee scene! AND ALSO THE THORNS OF WAR DEMO, because I (as parts of this post imply), have feelings. And also my thoughts on Iolanthe’s personality, since I did my first hellion!Iolanthe playthrough on Sunday! Look at me, trying to force posting accountability on myself.

► So, never did get around to writing a second entry yesterday. But that’s alright, because I can do it now. First, a link to the end-of-the-year writing meme I always do: 2016: Writing Year In Review.

► Second: A quick update on my Mystic Messenger playthrough. It’s Day Five now, and SUCCESS. I got onto Zen’s route! I didn’t end up running into a bad ending after all! I was a bit worried about that, since I was also getting a lot of hearts from Jaehee and Yoosung… I actually wasn’t sure if I had enough of a majority with any of them to get on a route at all, tbh. But I did, and it was the one I wanted to do first, so I’m happy. ♥

briefly cut for possible spoilers, though I personally don't think it's anything too important )

► Finally: The Fandom Snowflake Challenge! I missed Day One, and while I know that I can still go back and do it, I think that I’m just going to let it pass by. Instead, I’m going to focus on Day Two.

Because I've been kind of neglecting this journal, and it's been a while since I've made one of these posts.

It's in the same format as always— the title and author, an excerpt from the poem, and a link to where you can read the whole thing.

Because I love poetry, and I'm about to go to the dentist, and why not?

Another post where I dump some links to poems I've run across, enjoyed, and bookmarked. Fair warning: Most of the poems near the end of this post are about grief.

► Because I'm a softie, and this reminds me of how my mother has informed me that our neighbours haven't been letting their cat go inside overnight despite the increasing cold and lack of shelter: How To Assemble a Cold-Weather Cat Shelter. (Which reminds me, I need to ask her if she ever made him a warm place to sleep like she was planning to.)

Why didn't I know about this mug existing earlier? One of my favorite lines from the Lizzie Bennet Diaries and tea? Definitely a major do want. I only wish I didn't own so many tea mugs, because it makes it difficult to justify buying this. Sigh.

► Speaking of things I want to buy... a DVD set of CrashCourse World History? Um, yes please? And not only is it CrashCourse, which I loved, but the aesthetics of the actual boxset are absolutely lovely!

► I'm generally pretty indifferent to Benedict Cumberbatch— I really don't understand either the love or the hate— but this video of him reciting John Keat's "Ode to a Nightingale" makes my heart go doki-doki. Seriously. I listened to it 24 times in a row when I first ran across this.

► I haven't gotten around to checking this out more fully yet, but Thomas Jefferson's Cut-&-Paste Bible sounds quite intriguing.

How Legalising Prostitution Has Failed was the opposite of cheerful, but still an interesting read.

I'll stop here, because I need to head for class soon, and figuring out how to tag this is going to take a bit of time.

I've started to clean out my bookmarks (which, despite the incredible amount of folders and subfolders and sub-subfolders I have, still manages to be incredibly disorganized), and there's so many different things I don't want to just delete the links to, but I know I'll never see again if I just sort them into their own, special folder.

Hence, my deciding to dump the links in my DW. I'll be likely to see it again, it could potentially be interesting for other people (depending on what the links are to), and I just like the idea.

Anyways. As the title of this post indicates, this is my poetry edition. Because I love poetry, and I've just been reading more and more of it as time goes on. So it's a little more interesting, I'll quote some lines from each one I liked.

putting under a cut because it's semi-long )

There's more, but I think I may have overdone it as it is, so. Hopefully someone other than me enjoys this. ♥
