► Since my last update, I’ve only watched two episodes of Critical Role— parts three and four of Trial of the Take. I at first thought I wouldn’t have anything to say about them other than “I liked the other half of the party’s adventures better”, but there were a few things that happened in the latter half of part four that really caught my attention. cut for spoilers for episodes 20-21 )

Also, this is completely unrelated to the characters/plot of Critical Role, but there was this moment when one of the guest Wills (as himself, not in-character) said something along the lines of, “Crocheting is fantastic!”, which. Considering that my Critical Role-watching time is generally also my crocheting time, that definitely made me smile.

► I now have obtained all of Jaehee’s Bad Endings in Mystic Messenger! Some brief commentary:cut for spoilers )

► In other Mystic Messenger news… I didn’t mention this before, but sometime in the middle of January, after I beat Zen’s route, I decided to buy the Mystic Messenger VIP Package. This isn’t actually much of a surprise, despite my usual thriftiness: I have a huge weakness for soundtracks and a slightly-smaller weakness for art-or-guidebook-type things, and all the in-game benefits [unlimited phone calls!] just confirmed it for me.

The estimated shipping time was something like twenty-one days, so I didn’t expect it until sometime in the middle of February— which was why I was so delightfully surprised when it showed up today! I impulsively decided to photograph my unboxing, so I’m going to share bits from that now.
warning: very image-heavy )

tl;dr I’m super pleased with it! I definitely want to wait until I’m 100% finished with the game to dive into the books, but I’ve already loaded the CD into my computer, and am listening to it now.

► This year, I’m… actually doing a better job at commenting on non-exchange fics that I read? I mean, I’m still nowhere near perfect, but I’ve noticed today that I’ve actually been leaving comments on some of the fics or chapters when I have something to remark on, instead of thinking it to myself and never actually expressing it out loud. This is something that I’ve wanted to start doing again for many years now, so it’s kind of nice to see that I’m finally easing into it again.

►Speaking of which, I’m going to rec two of the WIPs I’m 1) enjoying the most right now and 2) have updated in this past week.

The first is because he strayed across the path (Harry Potter, currently 27K), which is an excellent canon-divergence taking place in POA. This is just such a cozy, feel-good read for me, and I love how it echoes the tone of canon while still doing its own thing. Idk, I’m finding it hard to talk about, but it’s been making me smile every time I read a new chapter. So that's good.

The other one is An Ever-Fixed Mark (Pride & Prejudice, currently 113K) which is a fantastic soulmark AU. It’s tagged as a deconstruction, and it does really dig into the trope, and does some great worldbuilding in regards to how soulmarks would affect the canon setting. The philosophy!

Also, the Darcy and Elizabeth dynamic in the last few chapters have been absolutely golden. So. There’s that. ♥

►Working my way through Jaehee’s other endings in Mystic Messenger! So far I’ve gotten the Normal Ending and Bad Ending 01.

cut for spoilers )

► I’m still slowly making my way through the episodes of Critical Role. Yesterday I finished up Episode 19 - Trial of the Take, Part 2. My thoughts, in bullet-point form: spoilers through episode 19 )

► I was going do a Mystic Messenger update at Day Nine, but by the time I found time to write up my thoughts, it was already pretty late, so I headed to bed instead. Then I figured that if I was updating on Day 10, I might as well wait for Day 11 to hit and write up all my ending thoughts at once… so here I am. cut for length and spoilers for the end of Jaehee’s route + the After Story )

► I’ve been poking around with crochet again. Specifically, I’ve been working on this baby blanket, as a surprise gift for a friend. I’m using different colors, though— I went with white, mint, black, and gold, since a bit of snooping around on her Pinterest suggested that that’s the color combination she’s wanting. It’s going pretty well so far!

► I’ve also started watching Critical Role. I’ve been meaning to do this for a long while now, since I’ve always been fascinated by D&D, and I already know from listening to Dragon Friends that I love seeing other people’s campaigns, but didn’t get around to it until now. I’m trying to listen to about an episode per day (though sometimes I only manage about half of one, since they’re so damn long), and right now I’ve just finished up episode 14.

Overall, I really like it! cut for possible spoilers )

I started watching before I started the above crochet project, but I’ve found that I really like watching it when I crochet. I’m not very good at focusing on audio-only* things (one of the reasons I’ve never gotten very passionate about music, and also why I never listened to podcasts before it occurred to me that I could listen to them while doing chores), so it helps me focus on the show, but it also gives me a set amount of crocheting time so that I don’t procrastinate. Win/win!

*Yes, I know it's not really audio-only, but there are long stretches of time when it's not really necessary to watch the screen, imo, so it's basically the same thing for me.

► Another Mystic Messenger update! Since I last posted, I got two of Zen’s bad endings, and have started Jaehee’s route. cut for spoilers )

► I also started playing Liar! Uncover the Truth!. Right now, I’m about to finish up with the 4th Liar, and I’m really enjoying it! It’s interesting in the sense that I’m not particularly interested in the romances in this game— I’m mostly playing because it’s fun to fit together all of the clues and figuring out who’s the one who’s lying.

I did have to laugh when I met the main character’s coworker, Ayumi— mainly because I was about two seconds away from naming the main character Ayumi before I decided no, that name didn’t really suit her. (Instead, I named her Kanae.)

► I think that I’ve mentioned before that my big brother and I have this thing where we chose a series (usually an anime) and watch through it together? I mentioned this because last night we finished watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which we started after I came home. It was a rewatch for him, but the first time for me.

a bit of my history with FMA and overall reactions, including spoilers )

I also kind of want to rewatch the 2003 anime now, but it looks like it’s no longer on Netflix, and crunchyroll only has the movie. Woe.

Speaking of which, it occurred to me while watching Brotherhood that brief spoilers for the end of the 2003 anime )

So, yesterday I finished up Zen’s route in Mystic Messenger! Well, not finished, exactly— I think for it to be finished I’d need to get all of the endings— but I got the good ending, and read the after story, so. cut for massive spoilers for days 10-11 and Zen's after story )

► I absolutely love today’s Fandom Snowflake Challenge.
In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.
Some of you may have picked up on this by now, but… I really love making recs. ♥ My criteria for recs this time around was “the first three fics that occurred to me when I thought, what should I rec?”.

► My Mystic Messenger update of the day: vague spoilers for the end of Day Five/Day Six )

► I ran across an AMV rec on FFA (well, several, actually, but I only watched the one for the anime I knew), and now I want to pass it forward. It’s Death Parade - Lorem Ipsum, and I thought it pretty well-made. (And hey, an excuse to use my Death Parade tag again! I honestly thought that wasn't going to happen.)

It’s been years since I last regularly watched AMVs… I don’t know if I miss it, per se, but I do still appreciate a good video. I might check out more of this person’s AMVs later. idk.

► I was waiting for the Day Three post of the Fandom Snowflake challenge to go up before posting this so that I could include it too, but… I think I’m going to skip out on this one. One thing that I’ve figured out over the years is that setting monthly and yearly goals don’t really work for me (as much as I love to read about other people’s goals and how they do on them). Setting daily and weekly goals (while keeping the broader picture of what I’d like to eventually achieve in the back of my mind) works much better for me.

► So, never did get around to writing a second entry yesterday. But that’s alright, because I can do it now. First, a link to the end-of-the-year writing meme I always do: 2016: Writing Year In Review.

► Second: A quick update on my Mystic Messenger playthrough. It’s Day Five now, and SUCCESS. I got onto Zen’s route! I didn’t end up running into a bad ending after all! I was a bit worried about that, since I was also getting a lot of hearts from Jaehee and Yoosung… I actually wasn’t sure if I had enough of a majority with any of them to get on a route at all, tbh. But I did, and it was the one I wanted to do first, so I’m happy. ♥

briefly cut for possible spoilers, though I personally don't think it's anything too important )

► Finally: The Fandom Snowflake Challenge! I missed Day One, and while I know that I can still go back and do it, I think that I’m just going to let it pass by. Instead, I’m going to focus on Day Two.

► So I just realized that there was a Dragon Friends Christmas Special podcast???? I managed to listen to it in the dying hours of 2016, and it was SO GOOD. So, so good. I mean, it was basically two hours of Freezo and His Christmas Adventures, so it’s not surprising that it was amazing, but still. That was a delight. cut for spoilers, and probably length )

► In the last few days, I also got a new phone, because my old one was dying a slow, drawn out death. I bring this up because, now that I have a new phone, I’ve decided to start checking out some of the visual novels/otome games that have gotten so much love on FFA, starting with Mystic Messenger. So far, I can definitely see why this one is so beloved, even though I’m still baffled at the thought of a visual novel fandom having so many fics.

I’m on Day Four right now, and I am in love. cut for the usual reasons )

►This entry’s getting quite long, but I don’t want to leave it off without doing one last thing. Reveals have happened over at Yuletide, which means that it’s time for me to talk about what I wrote. I wrote five stories, which is a Yuletide record for me— and that was such a nice surprise, considering that I'd barely managed to write/finish anything else this past year!cut for length )

► I might actually get a second entry out today, because 1) I want to get my usual my-year-in-writing retrospective up, 2) the Fandom Snowflake Challenge has started and I’d like to do that as well, and 3) there was another end-of-the-year post I wanted to do, but forgot about yesterday. We’ll see if I get it all done— I still have a lot of real-life stuff that I wanted to do today too.
straightforwardly: a black & white cat twining around a girl's legs; both are outside. (Default)
► I just realized when I went to post this that this is my 100th official post here. So yay for that?

► I have become so incredibly charmed by the podcast Dragon Friends, which I started listening to sometime last week the other week because I needed something to entertain me when I was trying to get through a tedious-but-necessary portion of an otherwise good game. Whereupon I then got so completely hooked that I basically started listening to it throughout all of my free time, even when I wasn’t in the middle of some sort of menial labor, which is pretty much unheard of in regards to me and podcasts.

And now I'm in love (or at least very strong-liking), and am seriously considering requesting it for Yuletide. I adore pretty much all three of the main characters, though who stands out as my actual favorite keeps changing.

cut for length, and spoilers through episode 2.10 )

► Speaking of fandoms that I’m considering requesting for Yuletide… I’ve also recently played A Little Lily Princess, which is a VN based on A Little Princess— a book which I hadn’t read since I was a kid, but actually reread in preparation for playing this game, as I could remember very little about it.

I played the routes in this order: Mariette, Becky, Lavinia, Jessie, Lottie, Ermengarde.
cut for length & major spoilers for pretty much all of the endings )
straightforwardly: a black & white cat twining around a girl's legs; both are outside. (Default)

► When I promised that I’d talk about Amnesia Memories in my next post, I… had planned on it being much sooner than this. This would normally bode ill for the amount of detail I’d include, since it’s been weeks since I played it, but fortunately, I actually did a liveblog on a (private, locked) tumblr for my own benefit, so I have something to jog my memory with! cut for length )

So, tl;dr, while there were things I didn’t like about it, overall I really enjoyed the game.

► An update on the transcribing process for the Lovesickness Event in Shall We Date? The Nilfheim:
    • J.J.: 100%
    • Orlando: 100%, as of last night
    • Jean: Currently stuck at the third Grace Point Checkpoint. I think I can probably get past this one (as of right now, I only need 1370 more grace points to pass it), but I highly doubt that I'll be able to pass the final checkpoint, since there are only seven hours left in the event. I can probably finish up the missing text from the diverging choices, but I don't think I'll be able to get the text for the Normal Ending. =/
► Now on to more positive things! Despite my above complaints, this transcribing project has actually yielded quite a bit of fruit for me in various ways. I ended up reading the text much more closely than I usually do and that, combined with the fact that I actually reread the side-stories instead of fast-forwarding through them the second time around, meant that I found myself picking up on quite a few small things that I hadn't noticed before and that I also promptly found myself saddled with more fic bunnies, whoops.

There's also a few details about the world of Nilfheim itself that I hadn't known before this event, some of which I missed during my first time through the event. The fact that people cannot become physically ill in Nilfheim— which actually makes quite a bit of sense, considering that they're all already dead— was the obvious one I carried away from my first playthrough, but there were some other details that I missed. The largest one that comes to mind is the fact that Nilfheim doesn't have a sun. In hindsight, this... probably should have been obvious, since every scene I have ever seen looks like it takes place at night / under moonlight, but somehow I'd completely missed that. And now the whole thing about Isabella being the "sun" of Nilfheim makes much more sense oh God I am an idiot for just realizing this now.

I'm not sure if the existence of another realm— Muspelheim— and its ruler, King Leo, was something that was revealed in Jean's Main Route, since I haven't played that one yet, but that was also new information for me. I really want to know more about it now, since I didn't realize that there were any other realms other than Nilfheim.

Finally, transcribing this event really hammered in how ridiculous the writing for this game could be. I mean, I always realized that it wasn't exactly great literature, but typing up some of these lines was definitely cause for amusement.
cut for examples )
...I think they speak for themselves.

► Speaking of the Shall We Date? series... While The Nilfheim is the one which I'm the most fannish about, I do play some of the other games in the series. I bring this up because I've been playing through Elias' route— my first route— in Shall We Date? Wizardess. I'm on Chapter 10, and the conversation between Liz and Professor Merkulova in that chapter fired up quite a few dormant thoughts/suspicions that I'd been having, which I really needed to share with someone. cut for spoilers )

Of course, it's always possible that 1) the game is really not going to be that complex or 2) that it expects you to suspect that and will make it turn out differently, but for now, I definitely think that that's what's going to happen.
straightforwardly: a black & white cat twining around a girl's legs; both are outside. (Default)

► Yesterday, I participated in [community profile] fandomsecrets's Friending Meme XVI, and now I have a few new people on the flist. Welcome! ♥

► Now, onto the main point of this entry. Some of you may remember my talking about Shall We Date? The Nilfheim last December. One of the things I didn't talk about much then were the events.
general event explanation beneath the cut )

Still, it's pretty easy to play through all the routes twice before the event ends. However, there is one major issue I have with these events, and that's this: once the event ends, the stories disappear, and it's impossible, as far as I can tell, to read them again. I have a memory like a sieve, so this is really a sour point with me.

For instance, the first time this game had one of these events, it was around the end of December. I played through all the routes, twice, but as of right now, I can only remember the bare minimum about what some of the routes were about. Since I've been becoming increasingly fannish about this game lately (and later events tend to refer to things that happened in prior ones), you can see how this is a problem— especially since I've been considering requesting it for Yuletide or some other exchange more and more. The monetary model is already, in my opinion, a huge roadblock in getting people to play this game, and having whole chunks of the canon being completely unavailable would only make it even harder.

This all leads me to my reason for bringing this up in the first place: the current event, which is called the "Lovesickness Event", which began earlier in February, and ends tomorrow, on 2 March.

This is the second time that I've played through one of these "grace point" events. This time, it had routes for Orlando, Jean, and J.J., and I played them in that order. However, when I was half-way through my first playthrough of J.J.'s route, all those above concerns coalesced into an idea for what should have been an obvious solution:

Why don't I just transcribe the event stories?

That way, I can just reread them whenever I want to refresh my memory on what happened, and, if I post them, I'll be able to direct people that way if I ever convince them to play the game. It's not quite the same as playing it directly— the loss of music to set the tone, and, while I've taken many screenshots, the loss of actually seeing the character's reactions as you read— but it's the closest I can get, and it's definitely better than nothing.

I'm really, really surprised that I didn't think of this earlier, and I really regret that I didn't think of it when that Christmas/New Year event was going on, because I remember Orlando's route in that one had some great Sunny/Isabella scenes. (I did screencap a few moments, but not enough. =/)

So, ever since then, I've been replaying the routes as much as I can, trying to get it all transcribed. J.J's was the easiest— since I was only halfway through my first playthrough, I got the entirety of his route, plus the two endings, transcribed rather quickly.

However, I'm having more troubles with getting Orlando's and Jean's route done. With both routes, I do have the basic route transcribed, as well as the premium ending. However, I don't have the normal ending for either of them transcribed yet, nor do I have the text for all the answer options during the choices yet.

Right now, I'm playing through Orlando's route for what is the fourth time overall, and the second time since I started transcribing. I think I probably can get to his normal ending, but... I'm not so sure I can do the same for Jean's, which is really troubling, especially since I remember that that one had a conversation between Orlando and Isabella that'd be important for a fic-bunny that attacked me last night.
cut for a mini-rant )

I have more to say about the story/characters, but this entry's already gotten pretty long, so I'm going to cut it short. Next time, perhaps.

► First thing's first: I've unlocked this journal. I did this because a couple of days ago, it occurred to me that I... didn't really have a reason to have it locked? Pretty much all of the reasons which led me to lock my original LJ in the first place don't really apply anymore. I do feel shy at the thought of just anyone being able to read what I write, but that didn't seem to be a good enough reason to keep things this way. So, unlocked it is.

► In a somewhat related note, I also posted fic today. This is "somewhat-related" because one of my goals for this year is to get at least a bit less shy in regards to my writing. While actually posting it is all good and well, I feel like I'm still hiding at least a little bit when it comes to the fic I decide isn't good enough for AO3. Posting fic to a journal where no one can see it is not the same thing as posting it somewhere where I know people might see it.

Because of this, I've decided that, from now on, when I post something— regardless of whether it's just on DW, or if it's on DW & AO3— I also have to mention that I did so on my next DW post. We'll see how this works.

Of course, the first time I do this, it has to be for a fic for an unconventional fandom. /sighs

► Today I am meant to talk about books I Just Finished. Well, this should be fun. This is actually rather fortuitous timing, because this topic segues nicely into something that I was thinking about yesterday / considering writing an entry about.

Yesterday, I finished reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. This is actually the first time I've ever read it, and I only did so because 1) I had finished reading my last read-while-I-wait-for-things book on my phone and 2) it came already installed on my Google Play Books on my phone. I've disliked the Disney movie since I was a kid, so I didn't really have high hopes for it.
we found wonderland / you and I got lost in it / and we pretended it could last forever )

► Do any of you remember that meme where you post the first sentence of the first entry for each month? I saw it popup on my flist some days ago, and it made me really want to do it again— I used to do it, and I can't remember why I stopped.

Without further adieu, 2014:
under this cut! )
In conclusion: I really need to stop beginning entries— and sentences in general— with the word "so".

► I... just finished writing the last papers I'll ever have to write as an undergrad. And I took my last exam this morning. ...For some reason, this makes me feel mildly panicky. It's starting to hit me that I actually am going to be graduating on Friday, and I don't really know how I feel about it / how to handle it.

► Which means that I need to distract myself. My next topic is Important Moments of Your Reading Life. Most of my important reading moments are more of montages of the many times I reread my favorite books as a kid, but there's a couple specific moments that do come to mind. One is how when I, as an elementary schooler, went to the book fair at my big brother's middle school, and came across Eleanor's Story: An American Girl in Hitler's Germany by Eleanor Ramrath Garner. My mom bought it for me, and it became one of my all-time favorite books— it's impossible to count how many times I reread it. It was just such an important book to me— I even wrote the author once, and she actually answered me with an actual, handwritten, personalized response!

It's been years since the last time I reread it, but I still have it on my bookshelf, with the letter the author wrote me tucked inside the front cover. I think I might need to read it again sometime— it's been far too long.

► Continuing my discussion of the Shall We Date? games I've played...
and I finally finish introducing these games )

And that's about all I have to say for now. ♥ See you all tomorrow!
